order of national importance (Read 1,718 times)

am curious to get not only drivers viewpoints but also anyone who has been on a clubs commitee and which events they see as more important
as a supporter/spectator my order would be as below
1. NZ Title
2. NZ Grand Prix
3. NI/SI titles
4. Club Championships
5. Club Points..


i know that certain classes have one off events ie World 240's etc
feel free to add them in

NZ Champs - always 25 plus cars

Dirt Cup - normally the 2nd biggest field of mods in any season

NI title - all the top NI runners compete

NZGP - no one really cares but is 3rd because is a National title!

Akl champs - always been the hardest regional one to win due to shear numbers competing. When was the last time a non Aucklander won it!

Taranaki / BOP champs - always reasonable numbers

Waikato Champs - numbers not always flash

Can't comment on SI title as never raced in it. To be fair though the numbers are never flash so really is just a Chch regional title in effect. This year may be different. Also can't comment on SI regional titles or Wgtn title as never competed

When i was young un, someone told me that the GP champ was NZs best at a one race "Grand Prix" championship, and when i learnt that wasnt right, ive sorta considered the GP a waste of time. I think it should be like that tho. Afterv teams events..

NZ Grand Prix (The one heat final champ!)
North Island Champs
Easter Meet (Rotorua or Whitianga)

Anyway back to the original topic

I think the GP rates above the Island titles as it is open to allcomers including those with illegal trial cars and overseas drivers.

So for me

NZ Title
NZ Grand Prix
Island Title
Track title(s)
Track points

Perhaps the more interesting debate is where do the "World" events fit in. World 240's, World Midget 50 lapper, South Pacific Super Saloons, World of Stocks etc

Are they above the NZ Title?

The "South Pacific" titles at Bay Park are really "Bay Park" titles. I've never seen any competitors from anywhere else at them.


I was looking forward to seeing the best Fijian drivers as well - maybe the govt wouldn't let them in.

where have you been hiding? Its not only Bay Park that has the south pacific champs. and there has been out of towners at that meet at Bay Park

The last few seasons NI and SI have more prestige over the Grand Prix titles as numbers have indicated especially in the Superstock class

Most race weekends I "hide out" at Bay Park. Around the pits and watch from up in turn 3.
Yes I have heard other clubs have Sth Pac events and I don't speak of those.
but lets get real - there are very few out-of-towners at BP for any of the Sth Pacs. And even with the ones that are - it's a joke to call them Sth Pac Titles as the representation would not even extend beyond the Nth Island (Apologies Kerry Bartlett - 4M Sprintcar) let alone the south pacific.

This is a bit like boxing and professional wrestling where they make up titles so there is plenty to spread around but quite frankly don't mean much.

How many other South Pacific Nations actually race the same or similar class of vechile that they could compete?
Sprintcars - NZ, AUS, any others?
Stockcars ?
Super Stocks
Saloons
Super Saloons
Mods
Kiwilites
Ministocks
Midgets - maybe in Sth America as well?
TQs
Solos - may get a few here too
Sidecars
Streetstocks

And then (a genuine question) do drivers / clubs from these nations get invited to attend?


My Order:
The NZ champs,
NI OR SI champs (which ever is the opposite to where the NZ title is held that year - only because of the expense involved in travelling the Strait).
Then your club champs - however they decide to do it - meeting or season points.

Everything else - what's the point?

My view is Nz Champs. Then GP, island champs. To be honest I only really concentrate on the Nz's, especially this year. Don't normally have the resources to stay and do the GP (when champs are up north), island champs for mods down south island in my view are just like a club night racing against the same people and obviously speedway nz doesn't consider the gp and the island champs as prestigious titles otherwise they wouldn't let trail motors run in them.

The National Title is the only SNZ "Title" worth any importance or relevance.

Super Stock World 240s.
Super Stock Teams Champs.
World of Stocks.
Stockcar Teams Nationals.
Modifieds Dirt Cup.
Midgets 50 Lap Classic..
International Midget Series.
NMCS Midget Series.

Taking out one of the events on the list above carries more weight in the importance stakes than a sideshow SNZ "Title".

Had to and the wrong place for this discussion so last post on it but if a trail motor won one of these events or even placed then got rejected at the next remits meeting by the drivers it kind of makes a joke of the championship anyway. Label away I don't mind, not doing it for my own selfish reasons as last year, so won't affect me and my championship achievements. ;D

Personally I think the GP has the most unrealised potential. The NZ champs are certainly the pinnacle for a competitor, but I feel the GP is where we can expand our horizons, have international competitors, allow the trail cars to run(and not at any other SNZ events), trail new formats. In short this should be the championship where we let our imaginations run wild. But what tends to happen is the GP gets presented like its a third rate event so drivers and spectators act accordingly. If it was treated like a unique championship in every way, the GP could be a season highlight in every class.

All of the championships were special to win or even compete in and felt great achievement when placed well in these events. Perhaps it still does for those starting in speedway or perhaps because the clubs having to market themselves for the public there is too many "championship meetings" like the stockcar 240, champion of champions, etc. maybe these awesome events take the shine of the snz titles.

Interesting how everyone sees things differently. Like I said before, to us they rate in order of NZ's, Dirt Cup, NI title then the GP.
I suppose it comes down to the hype and competition associated with the event. NZ's has always been the hardest to win and when the Dirt Cup started it was viewed by the drivers of the day as being just as difficult! This is why we personally rate the Dirt Cup so high up in importance. Others will have a different view.
NI titles are hard fought as well, as up to recently the sheer number of competitive cars was greater in the North than in the South. This may be closing a bit now.
The GP has always been viewed as an add on in our eyes and really has not been promoted or supported very well in the past. You can see how we rate its importance by the fact we are not going this year. With it in Blenheim next year it is highly likely we won't be at that one either! We would not cross the Strait for this meet.

I believe the GP needs to be run in the same Island, and close to the same weekend as the NZ tiltle. I also believe the GP can be run with a different format to have a new spin on things.

Gp's that are run in different Islands than the NZ's have a depleted field.

were you even at the super saloon meet after christmas 2007 and 2008??
there was south island registered cars at both of them.
