Well it is never a good start to the morning when you find speedway on the front page of the newspaper, because due to the attitude of the media in NZ its only bad news in our sport that makes it to the front page.
When the minutes silent was held for Samantha it was different to have a motorsport venue in such a calm silence, we as a sport are not normally renowned for our silence, but on this occasion it was called for. My best wishes go out to the family and friends of Samantha, and also for the crash crew and helpers at the Kaikohe speedway, it is part of our sport that we know can happen, but it is still a shock when it does.
Race 1 off grid 8, the race started well and I made a couple of passes on the outside of a really flat great condition racetrack, I was having problems getting off turn 2 with the car really flat, with a bit of luck after 3 cars coming together late in the race giving me a couple of places, finished 4th,
After a good race one I was confident off grid 1 for the start, with 69k Mike Wilson already done for the night I had a spare spot outside of me, I got a good jump and lead for a few laps but Brent McClymont was soon quickly around the outside, and I was left for the rest of the pack, with turn 1 and 2 being quite slick and slow in the middle the hesitation off turn 2 was worse and left me pretty easy pickings for the following drivers, a finish of 7th was pretty disappointing after a good race 1,
Race 3 and off the back, grid 14, I did not go anywhere from this position, and watching Brent McClymont struggle to make places in front did not inspire much confidence, I had a heap of fun seeing how far sideways I could get.
Not sure where I ended up overall, but I had a good time and the Rotorua club was exceptional as usual, the tribute to Stan Hickey at the end was very good as well.
