Michael Brunt has been racing for a few seasons and is steadily improving. He gave Michael Kendall a run for his money in a few races at the Springs this season.

What about that Wade kid from Huntly? Limited budget car, but he seemed to drive the wheels off it in his first season.

The next big thing in NZ Midget racing is Hayden Williams. First season qualified second for the Springs feature on his second ever night. He might be a bit erratic at times but remember not so long ago when a young kid named Pickens bent a fair bit of machinery. Williams has real ability, hopefully he will kick on over the next couple of seasons.
The next one to watch is probably Brock Mascovich provided he can get a regular ride. Didn't look out of place in the Midget field with limited runs this season.
Unfortunately for the Stratford and Huntly competitors by and large they aren't in the same league as the Springs guys. Hickman has been talked about for a few years now but has done little outside of Stratford and I'm starting to wonder if he needs to put an A on the side of the car to improve further.
Though with Worboys and MacLeod racing at Huntly they might be able to drag some talent up to the top level with them in the future. Problem is no TQ's at Huntly so their drivers are starting further behind the Springs guys in terms of their development.

One to watch next season, outside of the pair Percy has mentioned, may very well be Brian Edwards. The ex Scott Hatton chassis from BSL is reportedly to be fitted with Pickens spare Esslinger, and this boy has certainly proved he can drive a Ministock (2 years) and a Minisprint (4 years). Even though Michael Brunt's name isn't on the list above, I consider him already one of the established stars.....

Whatever, it looks like there is always new talent coming along to push the established stars, and it seems that TQs are once again providing a great stepping stone for young talent. As always getting the budget and the right support is critical, but there still are sponsors and car owners about who are willing to help thankfully. There is no doubt that racing at Western Springs is still the way to go places, as it has been for so long. Pity the track conditions are less than perfect for 75% of the meetings.

Mark Tapper proved he was not afraid to mix it in his first few runs. Give him more seat time, and he will be a top 5 contender for sure

I rate the "Old hands" like Worboys, Pickens, Kendall etc but as for the new guys coming through I was also impressed with Mark Tapher (Rallying background) and of course Hayden Williams.
Could be an interesting season next year!

Lots of up and coming drivers, thought the likes of Blair Bertram (first season at the wheel) and Rose Halfpenny, pedalled real well in cars that weren't really in the same league as the top boys.
Good to see these guys mixing it up around the country.
Saw Blair at Kihikihi at the weekend and Harrisville over easter, thought he raced real nice and clean and showed good signs for a first year boy.
The class is in good shape.
Bring on 2011.

I have watched Brock in the TQ's and I'm satisfied his ability in Midgets will be superior to his ability in a Stockcar.
