I heard that Mitty blew another one last weekend. Also Brad 5k has done 6 this season. Does anyone know why people would use a gearbox out of a van designed in England ? My Grandad told me he learnt about english built parts when he had a morris 1100. Surely these people are intelligent enough to build a strong engine......Why the Bedford parts mated to a 4-500hp Chevy or Ford ? Can anyone give a reason ?

The usual "CF Bedford" gearbox used in Stockcars is the ZF though... and you'll find that's actually a very good bit of GERMAN engineering! ZF Friedrichshafen AG - look them up on Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_FriedrichshafenZF gearboxes are also used by plenty of other well known companies, like BMW - or Ferrari! And yes, the ZF gearbox is probably the only good bit of engineering you will find in a Bedford CF ;D Porry will no doubt jump on and tell you all about them, I think he was the NZ agent or something??

It is not allways the fault of the gearbox, a misaligned bellhousing or the fact that the dowels are not long enough in standard form to align the bellhousing. ZF gearboxes hate any mis-alignment not like the old HQ's...Food for thought!!!!

people use em because they are short in standard length and give a decent ratio depending on engine and diff, they're quite strong, good Deutsch engineering. you can also get strengthened shafts for them, as advertised here on Macgors. No mucking round with home made or adapted shifters either...as I understand it, but yeah, i dont think the friendly kraut who developed the box for van work ever dreamt 400 to 450 or so horses would be running thru em. Getting expensive now when you see em advertised, i spose breaking 6 of em would get pretty hard on the pocket for most mere mortals.

thank you Chris . ;D yes NZ only cf specialists since Earlie 80s till i closed the yard down 2 years ago now.but still being inundated with calls not locally but through my oversea add in the UK .now re this zf debacle over g./boxes over the years we sold very little zf g/boxes in fact i remember when we used to bin them just remember the cf ambulances.cf school buses.cf fire engines.cf Mr whippys all with a chassis tare weight of 5 tons all with zf g/boxes .did they blow up .no.the only boxes that blew were the victor box .that used to fire 1st gear out the bottom of the box .when the zf s become popular in stocks we were selling them for $50 bucks now most of those g/boxes are still in use .i no tony bennitos stocky broke one clean in 1/2 an a few split the casings but they were impact breaks i no of cars been pushed backwards & blowing boxes . but as for 6 g/boxes an all the rest of it .not a box problem there is a 1000 hp drift car here Rb30 with zf box an a few others Ive re powered vans with all sorts of v8 combos along with diesel an other application's over the years with no box problems .the ironic thing is how people rave over HQ g.boxes that were designed for 1500 weight cars .little hint re zf boxes run 30/40 grade oil not 90 /phew time for a cuppa .cheers Chris . ;D

Unfortunately these gearboxes get little or no maintenance until they blow.
I never nuked a box in my last car which was ZF, but it sure helped having a gearbox specialist as my main sponsor!
Main thing was the front bearing would split the outer race and it would then change the way it felt and sounded, I could tell when it needed to come out.... It still functioned OK like that and I always finished the meeting which is a testiment to how strong they actually are.
In my opinion the ZF's are way too expensive so now I've gone to HQ, you can buy about 4 for the price of one ZF!

I got this original Ngatai Superstock card as a gift yesterday, cool, thanks. I'm curious; Who else runs a Raptor in a Superstock? Is there a North Island Raptor agent? image hosting service

Matt Boulton (841E) put 1 in his Car when he had it. Isnt that car now in Hawkes Bay?

414H Has run a Raptor for the last three seasons, broke it end of this season when a circlip broke, total cost to repair $3.75. Bought a spare Raptor just in case it should brake again during a meeting.
417H Also runs a Raptor
16R Now also runs one after to many ZF blow ups.
Two good points to a Raptor; Light weight about 1/2 that of a HQ and reliable. (In saying that we will probably now have the worst gear box season ever next season).

Yes I changed to a Raptor,(New Doug Nash parts getting to hard to find now) they are a nice little box and I don't regret changing. As for price, ring Tony at Cardwells or Dave at CHS and find our from the horses mouth...
