It was a great night of racing....which made up for getting wet & cold. Been going down to Palmy for so many years & should have known better. Didn't take the required clothing so paid the price...hahaha A huge thank you to all the teams that provided some great teams racing through the night....also to the other stockcar racers that turned it on in the consolation racing... ;D ;D ;D The superstock gold cup also provided some very hard & fast racing...  But most of all thanks to Palmy for taking the gamble & battling through the weather to complete all the racing...some other tracks or track could take particular notice of how to run a meeting properly. Well worth every cent for myself & two teenage sons....Cheers again! ;D |

I also live in Palmy and moan every week about our commentator. He is very poor and makes mistakes all night. But the thing that annoys me the most is that he only knows about three or four peoples name in the race. It appears he does not go to the pits and find out who people are even local P contracted drivers. I am sick of hearing about rees and family, Hemi, and in the mini stocks only knows a few. We need an up to date young very interested person. There must be better people out there that have more knowledge of who people are and accurate facts. Hit the nail on the head. |

A huge congrats to all the competitors for their performance over the weekend. I sat right near the wall coming out of turn 4 on friday and the force of some of those hits made me wonder why I ever allow myself to be strapped into one of those crazy steel monsters ;D Whilst my opinion on the commentary might be a tad biased I still believe it's time to blood someone new into the role, the amount of mistakes and incorrect information coming out was frustrating and at times laughable. Hearing time and time again it being said that a driver who was hung on the wall must have gone "thumbs down" and caused stoppage frustated me the most especailly hearing "newbies" to our great sport saying things like 'it didn't even look like a hard hit' and some guys must be tougher than others. I'm sure after commentating plenty of superstock teams champs Russell must be aware of at least the most basic of racing rules when your roll cage is exposed when hung up on the wall. Missing the start of races and taking minutes to even spot a roll over, then randomly guessing as to who it might be shows a lack of ability to commentate contact classes. I would suggest he turns off his monitor showing lap times etc and actually looks thru the window (from what is one of the best seats in the house, except for the setting sun) and start following races. I know the many years my dad (Ray Tarrant) commentated teams champs he put in a huge amount of prep work prior to the meeting to learn car/driver numbers, he used binoculars constantly to follow the action at the far end of the track, always sent his runner (me!) down to find out damage, injuries, driver changes, protests etc so the paying public knew exactly what was going on both on and off the track. Well that's my rant over, from what was an amazing spectacle, maybe I should stop racing and put my hand up to follow in my dads footsteps and give the paying public exactly what they want. Couldn't agree more Dave; your Dad was a real professional, and is sadly missed by this spectator. And may I add Roger Tonkin of Stratford is up there with the best,well been a few years since I have heard him but knowledgeable for sure. |

Was with Speedbox again for the Stockcar Teams, and while there are ways of being able to do both track and Speedbox commentary quite a few things would need to change for that to happen. The technology is available, but everything costs and everbody would need to be in agreement. Speedbox themselves have some ideas on such things as live links too, which may possibly be trialled at either PN or Rotorua next season. |

Yes, I think I did track co-commentary in 2009, was with 60 Minutes as a gopher in 2010 and with Speedbox as an interviewer in 2011, from memory. I've also done a few voice-overs for the Teams coverage to TV later, with both Paul Hickey and Jamie McCarthy, so depending on which DVD you've got I could be on there somewhere ;D (the voice-overs are done later after the program is edited). Ian Rawkins' idea with the live links is that they could be played live at the track as well as on Speedbox, and in the case of PN onto the big screen. As I said though, a lot has to fall into place before that can all happen. At PN I guess an FM frequency could be set up through Speedbox, but at Rotorua (another big supporter of Speedbox) they already broadcast their commentary via FM. Currently many of the interviews for Speedbox are pre-recoded while other classes are out there racing, so it takes quite a bit to tie everything just right. |

....he put in a huge amount of prep work prior to the meeting to learn car/driver numbers One way to assist everyone with being familiar with the drivers and riders in all classes would be to update the profile page on the Palmy website that's meant to list every competitor along with an up-to-date picture of the car or bike. I'm certain that Russell Harris has got one of those jobs that looks a lot easier to do than it actually is. |

Funny you say that bout updating the Palmy website GS im often on there trowling through the classes and driver info etc
Its overdue for an update with the Superstock picture still having Penn in the Silver bullet and many drivers still listed that im sure dont race currently etc etc

I'm certain that Russell Harris has got one of those jobs that looks a lot easier to do than it actually is. Like many things in speedway - including being a driver or being a referee - they look a lot easier from the stands, especially after the fact and sometimes with the benefit of slow motion replays, than they actually are, having to make those split-second decisions live. |

Okay, from where I was stationed during most of the racing (above the talk box), and also running tapes from the pits to the top level of the grandstand several times per night, I heard very little commentary over the two nights to make any knowlegeable comment on its content. |

As one who goes a long way back at Palmy, Dave Popplewell who now does the infield always did a great job in the late 70's.
last season he did some commentating at Harrisville with Christian Hermanson, I understand this was at short notice, with the knowledge of the old and the new they seemed to make a great team.
maybe we have something to build on when Christian is not racing.
no doubt there would be others willing to to have a go.

I don't mean to criticize but he also only concentrates on one or two drivers. Eg all you hear during a Modified race is Jacko this and Jacko that. My partner and I have a joke about it now - how long until Jacko is mentioned. The commentators at World 240's are in a class of their own. They have info from the pits, they know more than one driver etc |
