No wonder the final was a mess, racing at that time of night after a long hot day.... those poor guys. Well done to all of them. If Saloons finished racing at 1am what's the sprintcar title next season gona be like.......4am finish !!

If Saloons finished racing at 1am what's the sprintcar title next season gona be like.......4am finish !! Hi Holden 7 Cromwell have hosted the nz sprint at final a few years back, and one of nzs best Rodney wood taught the yanks a thing or tow, driving around the outside of them to take away 1 nz in what was one of the best sprint at titles in years. In regards to the length of time the racing took - the drivers do have to take into account the track surface and drive to conditions. It is not the tracks fault that at nz titles drivers want to lay it all on the line to win the biggest title of the year, which in it self can create more crashes, protests etc. Look forward to seeing the footage from Cromwell, and to hear a South Island car drove around the outside to win is awesome. Well done to rob flood, great to hear you had the reliability when it counted the most, we always new you had the class as. Driver.

From the pits commentary, the racing was incredible and obviously the drivers were all pushing to the limit of their abilities by all the yellows!!
it actually got annoying though - "here we go and (insert name here) is standing on that gas pedal and... oh no... another yellow"
or something similar...
but good on all drivers - congrats to the new 1,2 and 3nz's. you guys really earned it this time!

In an effort to keep the track in a raceable condition in 35 degree temp water was put on at the beginning of each race and drivers did several wheelpack laps before the flag was dropped. All the drivers that gave speeches thanked the guys that did track prep and kept it in good condition so starting later was a small price to pay for a race that everything was all on the line.

yes 4 saloon title races were good and yes track held up but 6pm to 1am, 7hr meeting not what you would realy call a family sport and entertainment especially with young children, no need for it to drag on that long as nowhere else in nz seems to have the problems cromwell does that causes meetings to run into the early hours also temp was no way near 35 on sat night low 20s at most

Earth retains heat very well. Too the extent of being a heat sink and retains summer temps in winter time. So even though you may be chilling as the night temps dip, the ground will still be at mid afternoon temps, even with a nutse load of water poured on it.

The meeting on the Friday night ran like clock work. Saturday's night meeting started at 6pm and the 1st saloon race didn't happen until 8.15. That was a long wait, so long in fact the anticipation just died. It was hurry up and get this race meeting over. Cromwell ran a good 2 day meeting. The drivers had started arriving at track around 3pm and it was hot sitting around waiting to race, maybe the late start of the final race, drivers had lost their concentration, hence the crashes.

I'm surprised the cars could get sunstrike before 7pm with the narrow gap they have.

Cromwell did an awesome job to keep the track in good condition despite the incredible conditions they had to contend with. Yes it got much to late for spectating families, but no that is no excuse to restrict the cars competing for a National title so I think they went about it the right way...

With the format was there really any need for 3x 20 lap races to decide the grids for a 25 lap winner take all final?
3 heats and a one race final is fine but 3x 15 laps & a 20 lap final is more that enough to decide a champion. Just seemed a bit of an overkill to me. It's not an endurance championship.

Flood and his crew of supporters began their journey to Cromwell last Thursday heading to the New Zealand Saloon Championship hosted by Central Motor Speedway over Friday and Saturday evenings. "As we left Blenheim, I thought . . . how cool would it be to qualify into the top 20 cars to race in the final," said Flood. "I never really gave one of the top three places a thought." www.stuff.co.nz/marlborough-express/sport/8263795/Flood-snatches-title
