Tim Do you not think as SNZ is trying to become more like a business and be run more efficently that a lot of changes are due, Lindsays comment has a lot of merit SNZ should appoint officials to tracks not the promoters etc then there is no problems over decisions that are made they answer to the governing body just like answering to any CEO in a business.

(vii) Competent marshalls, track staff, announcers and PA system for crowd and pits (viii) Health and safety in place and operating (ix) Fire crew, crash crew, medics and appropriate vehicles in the infield. (Including specialised infield personal depending on the classes racing). (x) Adequate ticket boxes, entrance way and signage. (xi) Adequate results board – with plenty of room around it for checking of results. (xii) Fully operational website / media releases process. (xiii) Championship log book to be implemented and filled out. (xiv) All amenities and grounds of the facility must be in presentable condition.
In all seriousuness, which of those would Meeanee have failed to achieve prior to the meeting? I'd suggest none of them. Any other issues are currently outside of SNZ’s scope, but that could change it the members want it to.
with all due respect Tim there is meeting the criteria and then there is meeting the criteria. what i would suggest happens is that you review these requirements against what actually happened becasue some of this is very loose. Point 1 for a start does not require the track to stipulate the numbers it can hold and justify that figure. if this first clause is not set and agreed accuratley then a number of other clauses will fall over which is what happened. 25 toilets minimum is considered sufficient for how many people ? if it is adequate for 5000 people it then becomes inadequate if they let 7000 thru the gate. a lot of other clauses here say "adequate" - unless you actually stipulate a figure the "adequate" could mean anything. Pfloyd - I agree with what you are saying in terms of the rules quoted above being very very open to intepretation, but in my opinion Tim's last sentence has kind of summed this up - "the members can change this if they want" - that is the clubs have to decide whether they want to improve the standards that they operate within via the SNZ rulemaking process. For those of us (like myself) that are spectators only, our influence can be 1/ make our views heard here and other channels 2/ Write a letter to your local track pointing out what you feel they need to improve on (including the rules) 3/ join a club and try to influence from within (or even aim for the sky like Tim). I sincerely hope though that those who have the ability to influence the rulebook next time around are taking note and starting to think about what is being said in these threads and how the sport (and therefore rulebook) can be improved for the betterment of its spectator experience and the long term improvement in all around professionalism. Yes I am 4 real Ramjam and still want a reply from Tim Hi there ramjam as this is a discussion forum and tim has asked to ask him anything , I think matthew7's question is eligable! however now that it is out there i also would like to know, It has been past by more than one source , one of which is more than in the know that the car in question had an illegaly placed left to right brake bias valve, and was ruled out of the meeting! the real question would more so be, how after being told you cant race did he come to be out there? If it was protested , how can you possibly protest a blatent disregaurd of the rules ? Does this not make a complete shambles of the rules that us as the drivers make?

Look guys , the way I understand it this thread was started by Tim to try and assist people understand the workings of SNZ as per

I don't believe he was looking for people to air their past grievances or things they 'had heard' about competitors.
I'm certainly not comfortable with competitors or any other person being called out in here.

The 8 spot relegation to Terry Corin in Ht 2 of the NZ Super Saloon Champs at WP last weekend, relegated to behind the car he allegedly made contact with; is that something we're going to see more of? I ask, because I don't think I've seen somebody relegated that many positions before....

Hi Tim,
In regards to rule changes, the rule around the "wording of event names" with the international, world title etc, is this a rule that can be changed during the season or only every two years? If so, how do we post a remit for this? More the criteria for the ruling/fee then the actual rule itself.

Hi Tim - my question is : when tracks host title events is it there discretion on how much to may for prizemoney or is the prizemoney pool allocated at SNZ level.
Just asking as I've heard many gripes about how little competitors are paid vs the amount of gate takings the promoter receives.

Hi Tim. My question doesn't have anything to do with the NZ Superstocks... so you are safe there.... How ever my question is how come a minisprint that gets pushed out the gate to start his mot what or gets put to the infield but yet a car that stops on the track and cant start gets a push and is allowed to race??? I see the rules as you are not aloud help from anyone to get going so if this was the case shouldn't both cars be on the infield? This happened in the weekend at my local track and the guy who got pushed out the gate was not aloud to race but when he said to the guy you started this car when he stopped the speedway person didn't want to know... what is the go here??? A minisprint has to leave pits under own power,if it has come to halt on track due to avoiding a spun car etc and is not the prime cause of yellow that car can have limited assistance to be started.Minisprints can be hard to restart when they come to a quick stop.(I used to run one)Hope that helps Lunchbox

Hi Tim, Thanx for the thread.
You have answered most questions I have, and have given me an in sight to how SNZ operates, and more so as to the limitations you operate under.
A few questions though,
Do you think the track criteria, for hosting a NZ title, has had the desired effect? Was it not to ensure those allocated the titles were up to the job. Does the criteria need tweaking?
At the end of a championship you suggest there is a de-brief. What happens with the outcomes? I carry out these at work (after gas emergencies)and out of them came action points. What is the end result of SNZ de-briefs?
Do you think the scheduling of the NZ stockcars, NZ stockcar teams and NZ superstock champs were ideal?
Lastly, if everyone wanted a change from the seemingly archaic constitution (or whatever it is called) under which SNZ is run, how would this be achieved. Total dispantion or something not so extreme?
It seems the voting system at conference is far from transparent, or fair for that matter. Under the the current rules that govern the sport is there anyway to change this? There are some major players (promoters) etc that seem to be able to block some initiatives for the betterment of themselves. Surely each individual licence holder having a vote on each remit would be favourable?

A lot of people believe there are too many classes in speedway at present. Does SNZ have the power to disestablish a class or force mergers etc, or can they only sanction and guide new classes?

Here a question where I would like Tims personal opinion aswell as an SNZ answer. Do you think that the entry level(ministocks etc) and mid range level racing (stockcars, minisprints) are getting to be a little expensive to "run". I say this keeping in mind that I do know that money can buy speed but talent can also buy speed. I understand the costs of superstocks, sprintcars, super saloons but could some of the other classes be made more "affordable"

The simple answer here is that the competitors ARE Speedway NZ. We have over 3000 members when you add up 2600 competitors, 24 tracks and 500 officials. Most of the tracks are club-run, which means SNZ members delegate control of their track to a committee, as they delegate control of SNZ to their AGM delegates and the elected Board. One of the reasons I’m here to answer questions is because there is a disconnect between the members and their rule making process needs to be addressed if the sport is to move forward. The Board are working on some innovative approaches to try and rectify this over the next few months.
do you think speedway will sharpen up the gap between professional and amateur as I think the sport is at that point!
Realistically we will never be a professional sport. That doesnt mean we shouldn't aspire to be the best and most popular amateur sport in NZ though.

Great questions mediadog, and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to to the replies! We really can’t get into specifics as there are privacy considerations involved. However, I can confirm that none of the injuries were deemed serious by St John.
On the topic of the NZ Superstock Champs, will there be an official apology to the competitors/spectators, made public by SNZ or the club over the track conditions on the first night? If not, why not?
Obviously Speedway NZ can’t speak for the promotion at Meeanee (which is not the club), but Speedway NZ’s reaction to the events at the NZ Superstock Champs are not yet finalised, so sorry to say I can’t comment much further than that.
As with a lot of sports, volunteers are essential, considering the gate takings for a national title meeting reaches into the many tens of thousands of dollars over a two day meeting, why are officials including referees not paid? This way if an official, lap scorer or referee etc made inconsistent calls, they could be fired and a replacement fills the vancancy, which would surely promote more consistency, and professionalism, as per any job throughout the country.
The simple answer is funding constraints. Speedway NZ pays its volunteers the maximum it can under IRD rules, and moving to the next level would require a significant increase in competitor licence or track permit fees.
When will the issue of prizemoney be adressed also? Tracks are allowed to vote on who gets to hold a national title, should the prize pool not also be set to a higher standard, as often the amount of money on offer for NZ titles appears relatively small compared to gate takings at the event. The minimum prizemonies for NZ titles were only introduced in 2012, and changing those amounts can only be done via remit at the 2015 Annual General Meeting.

Youth Ministock stoppages have long worried me. The red lights come on and there are some horrendous nose to tail crashes often far more serious than the cause of the red lights. I personally would like to see orange lights, maybe for anything other than a roll over, and single file restart. So basically saloon rules, Now the clincher It might be considered a racing rule and only be able to be changed by the proper remit proposal but I consider it a safety issue and should be able to be changed under that guise if the powers that be were of a mind to. Sorry for the clumsy question but could that be a "thing" and if so how can it be changed ? Some tracks are running the Saloon orange light rules as a trial, and eventually a decision will be made whether to adopt it nationally. But it would be fair to say that regardless the number of Ministock injuries dropped away massively last season, which was very encouraging

Is there a template/list of guidelines available to tracks holding SNZ title meetings and what is done by SNZ to ensure that all is in place prior to an event being held ? Tim, The above post is valid and one that should be addressed especially for the tracks where many of the original experienced committee members have moved on leaving new chums to run a championship. The recent NZ Super Stocks at Meanee for instance appeared to need help in this respect. A "How to Run a NZ Championship" guideline book with check sheet of to do's and not do as well. The majority of tracks do a great job of running the premier events so input from several of these experienced people would go a long way. Ray Hi Ray, there is a requirement for all host tracks to do exactly that (fill in a guide book), and I know its something that Speedway NZ's Promotional Team are keen to ensure happens this season.
