As of this morning Shane is doing a lot better, and reportedly making huge progress every day. He's still going to be in Auckland for a little while longer yet before heading home to the sunny HB, but instead of sleeping a lot like he was a week or so ago he's now having to be told by staff to go to sleep!! Talking to Philippa it certainly sounds like the fighter is fighting back. More news in a few days. Barry B that's great to hear so will shane race again next season to try and win the superstock title for 3yrs in a row

I agree, by now it should be determined that the injuries are non life threatening, which is great.
We all wish Shane the best and hope for a full and speedy recovery.
I know I don't want gruesum details, but it would be good to know what he is dealing with, injury wise.

I agree with what you're saying to a certain extent sonic33, but at this stage the family are not entirely comfortable with that (until everything with the recovery is a little clearer I imagine) and I guess we have to respect that. Maybe when the time comes for Shane to head home to HB we can all know a little more.
I hear what Mikey69 is saying about the horse racing incident as well, but with that comes having every unsavory incident in your sport plastered across the newspapers and television screens as well. Sometimes we're better of being a niche little sport that is a well kept secret from the mainstream media.......once they are involved you cannot pick and choose what news is reported. Spreading all good news stories is not in their DNA.

This thread has had over 30,000 views..... Goes to show just how much support and concern there is amongst speedway fans nationwide. Shane has been at the top of his game for many years and we are reminded at times like this how dangerous the sport can be. These guys with amazing machinery provide awesome entertainment week in week out And all at their own expense. Thank you to Shane and ALL the drivers who put themselves on the line..... for their teams, the fans, and for the sport itself. Get well Shane and thanks to you and your family for allowing us to hear of your positive progress through this time

Speaking with Philippa this morning, Shane is still making great progress on a daily basis but it's still going to be a long slow process as some of the breakages are basically being left to heal themselves via bed rest as opposed to operations. He had an infection (who doesn't pick up an infection during a hospital stay I'd like to know?) which slowed progress for awhile, and at this stage Shane will be remaining in Auckland for at least another month. I'll probably only update every week or so now, as he's over the worst and into the long slow rehabilitation phase so there isn't much to report on a day by day basis. Our thoughts are obviously still with Shane and family however.

Thanks for the update Barry. It probably goes without saying but with the length of stay in Auckland, please convey to Philippa and Shane that if there is anything they need doing in the realms of possibility, they only need to ask. I personally know what it is like to have family in hospital away from home for a length of time. Great to hear that he is winning the fight and things are going in the right direction. Regards Ivan Smeaton.

Barry B what are the breakages that are healing them self and has anyone 4rt of setting up an account for donations to help shane and his family thru this difficult time

Thanks barry for the updates & your not wrong there about who doesnt get infections well in hospital as its not the 1st time i have heard of that happening & its prob due to them being so clean & the body cant cope with so the the bugs have no where else to go but to cause infections, cause as when you are out in the big wide not nice world welive in day to day the bugs arent trapped. To mordecai its not nice to keep asking what the breakages etc are all the time cause if he wanted you & every1 else to know he wld of said so stop asking, put yourself into the penns families shoes & if that was you laying in that bed wld you want the whole world known what is wrong with you so just be great full barry is keeping us up to date with his progress & respect the famlies wishes. So all the best to shane & family

Went and saw Shane last night, he's doing really really well, in great spirits but totally over not being allowed to get out of bed while bones heal. Hopefully be able to head back home to HB later this month......there's talk of Joe Faram attaching Shane's bed to the underside of his chopper with a couple of bits of rope and getting him home that way. I'm assumuing Shane's team of medical experts may have other ideas!!

Went and visited Shane again today. He has a meeting with specialists next Wednesday, and all being well may be able to head home a week or so after that if bones have knitted as expected. Shane is feeling pretty good, so fingers crossed. More news next week.

Shane was up and about a little yesterday, for the first time, but am dropping in to see him later today so will post more news after that. Progress will now be visible, which is great news.

Shane's now up on his feet, walking okay with the help of crutches and extremely hesitant without them, but is in great spirits and now just has to wait for an ACC assessment and report before he can be released and go home. That is scheduled to happen next week, so more news then.

Shows how easy one moment in time on the track can lead to such an upheaval in a drivers life(and his family's). 8 weeks now since Shane was injured. Good to hear the recovery is going well. Shane is never far from our thoughts when ever we are watching or even thinking Superstocks.
