McDonalds KIHIKIHI Speedway today, green-sheet opportunity and working bee. Didn't see too many 'bees' but clearly a helliva lot of preparation work has been done. The track, surrounding grass banks, the lights - looking great!
Opening night 'Fireworks on and off the track, in the infield' is programmed for Friday 17 October, BUT that may yet change to the Saturday the 18th in the absence of any competing tracks racing and to provide a greater opportunity for visiting drivers to participate. I'm told the track lighting is great and I look forward to night racing at Kihikihi. Will help maintain a bit of moisture in the track.
The Club President, Rossco Cresswell (Saloon 77k) was on site doing what he does best, messing with the tractors!

Made the decision, subject to KK approval, a while back. Baypark is no longer the home for 1988 Kuriger saloons with 60 year old drivers! A handful of saloons of the 'top shelf' variety. Gone are the days of 40 plus saloons on the track with races last season now struggling to reach a 'bakers dozen'.
The Saloon Class has got to the point whereby it needs to adopt the 'southern A-grade system', with a number of competitors taking the class way beyond it's intent and purpose. Once a saloon achieves repeat lap times of an agreed max the competitor should move on to super saloons.
We'll still race at Baypark and can confirm how often once their calendar is out. Kihikihi Speedway is an excellent club to belong to in a number of areas, as with all facilities, has strengths and weaknesses. It's my intention to continue to travel extensively while I can and Kihikihi reduces the need for clearances. Now with lights it is coming into it's own.

I don't allways agree with some of Mr Guys posts or comments however no truer word said than "a number of competitors taking the class way beyond it's intent and purpose" The Saloon class seems to have attracted a number of competitors that are appear to be operating well outside of the intent of the class. It seems that in many cases it would be cheaper to run a super saloon than what is being invested in saloons. Perhaps its time to have a serious look at where the class is going in the future.

Yes i have to agree ,but with a little caution to the wind ,those who race saloons make the rules ,so those who think theyre old and relax may just find it is just as competitive on smaller tracks where skill and set up is crucial not horsepower,a good example is Mr Twogood

congratulations Kihikihi, place is looking fantastic. If I had my way, every track in the country would have a solo track inside the stockcar track...nothing better than a real old fashioned kiwi meeting with bikes, mods, stocks and saloons! Hope you have a massive season.
