With all the talk over the last while about Western Springs vs Mt Smart and the Grandstand issue at Waikaraka Park (now looking good with a temporary solution), I am interested in hearing what your ideal speedway venue would be like.
From a spectator, competitor and entertainment point of view, what would it be like and what would it have?
This is purely hypothetical with no consideration of budget or landlord.
- What is the track like? Is it banked to create two fast lines and a third for those good enough and brave enough to find it? - What are the pits like and what do services do they have? - Do you like to sit on the straights or the corners and how close do you like to be? - Should it have a lounge and bar? - Are grass banks the best place to keep kids amused until racing starts? - How important are clean bright and safe toilet areas? - How good does the food service need to be and what should be on offer? - Would competitors use showers after racing if they were available? - Would a big screen posting lap times or position on track with points tally for championships during a race add to the entertainment value?
What would you do?
I am interested to hear if you are an Eldora (build it in a corn field and they will come) or a soft seat, cup holder and action replay kind of fan these days....

Replicate Rotorua with a slightly bigger track. Love the grass, the terraces, the quality of the track, the food! Baypark is certainly new and has some excellent features, but it equally has some major disadvantages and more 'class specific'.

Ruapuna is not ideally situated on a bloody flight path of all things and a bunch of whinging neighbours who don't like the noise which sucks big time

One thing that comes to mind, the hotdogs are getting smaller and the price is getting bigger...... Not ideal

Western Springs is the ultimate. From Roman times :The Gladiators come to fight and race their chariots to please the crowds According to recent times in this modern day of age ,they still have the slaves that fed and looked after the gladiators at the ultimate Western Springs .

Greenstone gets my vote. Nothing cooler than laxing in the car on turns 3 and 4 looking up the valley. Add that view to the fields at KOTC and there is nothing like it (Sorry Nelson).

Not right now it's under water. Huge improvements here with the road shifted, extra viewing area, and new club rooms. Has been a lot of work gone on here, must be a great working party for such an upgrade.looks great.

I think my venue would incorporate the following
The track would be shaped like Gisborne but with the track surface of Waikaraka, The pit area of Baypark (Water, Electricity, Space, The Pit area would also incorporate Clubrooms with a bar and BBQ Pit), The Seating & Grandstand arrangement of Palmy, The Corporate area & Parking facilities of Western Springs. The facilities for the Public would include several food courts areas, and the standard of toilets facilities like Baypark.

Not just the fact that I am from HB but I think Meeanee has a lot going for it. Good track shape Plenty of Pit space which has just been extended even more Ample car park area The only thing I wish we had was Palmerston Norths seating instead of the old style wooden grandstands. Bay Park in my opinion is not ideal. It has much to large a track making it class specific as noted above The surface turns everyone red when the whirlwind kicks up the dust. I have seen Mums and Dads caked in Clay and wonder how the heck you ever attracted them back again?.

hawkes bays I always feel needs better lighting and its hard to get decent sight lines youre either to far away or to close
but every tracks got it good/bad points. but most tracks would have been built 1960s/70s using club members
and most haven't changed that much .
but honourable mentions go to temarua and rotorua . lots of work done

woodfordglen has had good upgrades over the last few seassons, including better food options as well. the track shape is horrible though for teams racing. its to long so the cars spread out quickly and that tight turn 3 is nasty after a long fast straight.

Wacky park track at the Rotorua venue. Would need a second road in/out or more lanes to town to reduce bottle neck when leaving.
