Many of us brought up on a diet of the Teams Champs over the years can reminisce about the rabid support that the various tracks get. You could guarantee that the orange Nelson horde would gather in the city end. The Wildcats would be opposite them at the Pascal St end. Waikato would populate the bottom right hand corner of the grandstand with the god awful din of cow bells. Hawkes Bay & Rebel supporters would gather around turn 4. And they made a racket as their gladiators strutted past them on the track - it made the atmosphere electric.
With 90% of the seating now reserved it seems to be making it very difficult to replicate that in the stadium with pockets of support gathered around the arena. Unless you had super-organised groups buying en bloc then it is difficult to replicate that situation.
A suggestion then - Palmerston North in conjunction with the ticketing agency might want to consider offering block bookings to the attending tracks represented i.e. give Hawkes Bay a block of 150 seats at the 4th turn & give the club 4 weeks to sell them to club supporters. What does not sell after 4 weeks can then be put back on the market. It's a little bit like what English football teams do for the away fans - keeping them in one section to make a din & add to the atmosphere.
Just a thought :-).

For us part of the enjoyment is meeting and mingling with people from other tracks. We would not be at all interested in just sticking to our own group like a bunch of teenagers.

Nobody would be making you sit with others from your home track though. It's just that currently it's all but impossible for those that would like to do so, to actually make that happen. As a way of squeezing more people in, perhaps with the infeild not being utilised, the Wellington supporters could be placed on the pole line of turn one, the Wanganui suporters on the pole line of turn two, & I would put the Nelson supporters on the pole line of turn three, & the Gisborne supporters on turn four pole line. This might also help stop the cars from crossing the pole line, or not...  |

Must admit had a mixture of people around me in the middle of the grandstand all having a good time.BUT i must say i was very disappointed to hear when the chants went up for the different teams that people booed the Panthers so come you losers cheer for a team but don't boo for the other its disgusting i think.

I used to think so too, but at the same time we must remember that the Panthers really are the best in the business.... They set the standard yearly and clearly they hold the bar well above what many people think it should be... however they are also thier own worst enemies in that by being so successful they are creating that desire in fans to see them fall and lose to the other teams like they did last year... Its the under-dog vs the panthers everytime they go out - a huge amount of pressure on the team and in NZ speedway far more love the underdog than the bar raiser! |
