The way I look at numbering for teams, is that in football or basketball you keep your number with you. For example, Steven Adams' number is 12, so when he decides to play for NZ, he'll be number 12, not anything sequential.

many spectators that are not familiar with numbers are going to be just that regardless of what number they wear so that argument is totally invalid. there is plenty of time from scrutineering right up to and including the grand parade where drivers are clearly visible with their cars to get familiar with driver numbers. to top it all off they are even written in the programme. it is clear that those few that complain are doing so from their own incompetence, ignorance or lazyness.

yeah but it can be hard for some fans when drivers pull out from a team a week or so before and then their number is used by someone else and then the letter gets changed the following year, they can get a bit confused.

Buy a program. All the info is generally in there anyway. And what happens when your 6th driver has to race? Do you then have to change the numbers on the car he/she gets into to match their car even though they aren't driving their own car?

Richie McCaw started games in 3 positions, he didn't take his number with him, each position had its number and he wore that, but we all still new it was Richie. If anything I think teams should be sequential numbers, just like Nelson/Tigers.

ok so I went back and found a poll on this topic and the results were
team numbers 35.71% individual numbers 64.29%
so I guess I have a few friends that agree with individual numbers

I like team #s myself Reminds me of all those polls that have Labour under 30% and when the reporters ask the Labour party what is going so wrong that you are sub 30%? the answer of course is Nothing is wrong with us, in fact we are very popular, the pollsters are just asking the wrong ppl!!

Teams races are dynamic with a lot happening in a very short time frame. Personally I would prefer to be watching what is going on, on the track rather than constantly looking at a program to try and work out which drivers were just involved in a particular incident. Maybe I am dumb or lazy like one of the previous posters said, but that does not change the fact that I know the contracted numbers of several drivers from around the country in both supers and stocks but have no idea in a lot of cases who is driving under the teams numbers. I also look at it from another point of view, and that is that it is a very real achievement for a driver to be good enough to represent their track in a teams race and that achievement in my mind is recognised by having that drivers number on the car so that at any time in the future their achievement is easily and immediately recognised without looking in a programme. At the very least those stupid numbers that the Auckland and Rotorua stockcar teams use should be banned. Just my humble opinion.

If it's a gill car it'll be more like 2021 sparky haha. Individual numbers, being a team is having all the same colours is enough. Bengston motor I hear so ...... Is now in

Just read that Bengston won't be racing because of his motor so Simon Joblin will be the fifth driver for the Challenge cup. That means one previous Panther (Scott Joblin) and four Mustangs.
