Start off with a four bolt mains block if you can - they are a lot stronger and hold together longer. either way though get it checked/prepped just so you know what your starting with.Put in a decent set of bearings, a good crank and a good reliable oil pump - you dont need the flashest huge volume beast, a higher ratio of oil helps but dont go overboard here.
A rebuild kit like pirates used would suit from there - that sorts out the rest of your block.
Finally cam, lifters and some heads. can get a cam and lifter kit for about $4/500ish, im not sure about whats legal for saloon heads so cant give a price there.
make sure you have decent gaskets throughout and you have a solid little puppy that should keep you on the track for a few years
Give segedins a call, they were good to me. I also used summit racing in the states as well. As chev parts are cheep over there, I found with shipping costs I got a better level of product for the same price
As off the shelf here. I did get the cam out of NZ (crower). People mean well and say do this or that, listen and do your research. It's your car and you are driving and paying.
I agree with bottom end is priority, you can replace cam and heads easy enough as ability and funds improve if you want to. I have Saginaw heads so not flash but I am running.
I run a vented helmate with a filtered fan and probably the best decision I made other than best safety gear I could get. I have gone with steel firewalls instead of ally too.
Will probably never be a front runner but feel safe and have improved so far for my first season. I run a two bolt 010 block and so far no issues, not that I am pushing it.
As long as it can get sealed and greensheeted, it's all good, the rule book was very well read while I built mine.
Good luck.
