The Charlie Berntsen Trophy is up for grabs next Sunday, November 29th at Oceanview Speedway. This will be the first time The Charlie has been competed for since Big Bad Charlie's unfortunate passing, and competition is sure to be fierce. Already the Rees family has indicated their intention to front up, and we are expecting a bumper field of stockcars to honour Charlie's memory. It's also the first round of the Elite Mechanical Stockcar Cash Challenge. There's a total prize pool of $5000 up for grabs for those who compete in all four meetings of the series. The second round is on Sunday 13th December, with two further rounds in March and April. The overall winner of the series will take home $2300, courtesy of Mike Mooney from Elite Mechanical and Engineering Services Ltd. Racing starts at 3pm next Sunday at the Oval by the Ocean. This should be a fantastic meeting.

@ Craige - confirmed from out of town are the three Rees cars, Ron and Brendan Tye, Rob Mason, Hilton Parker and Les Hepworth, and Jayden Ward has expressed interest. Ramjam tells me there'll likely be five Wellington cars there, plus we'd certainly expect other visitors from Palmerston North and Stratford in particular. With the local contingent, that's well over 40 cars already, and probably more. If tracks like Wellington, Palmy, Hawke's Bay and Stratford are affected by rain tomorrow night there could be even more guys needing a skid. Oh; and Dion Mooney is back from his 21-day stand-down, so whoever is leading the points into the last race will need their wits about them The format will be two groups for qualifying, and a 26-car field for the three-race Charlie Trophy. In addition, there are 50 entrants in the West Coast Youth Minis, and they will race the same format as the stockcars; two groups then three championship heats. Also on the programme are Superstocks, Production Saloons, Sidecars and Golden Oldies so the pits will be chokka. Racing starts at 3pm, and the weather forecast is for a mainly fine day with light winds.

Well done to the Wanganui chronicle, and their speedway reporter who looks to be doing a good job.

Well done to the Wanganui chronicle, and their speedway reporter who looks to be doing a good job. Cheers Mr Jam. We are quick to complain about the media not covering our sport, but if you ring the sports editor and have a yarn, then supply them with the information there's a better-than-even chance they'll publish it. Newspapers especially don't have the level of staff they used to, so in an area like ours, the organisations and sports that get coverage are the ones who are proactive in generating it. As for the racing itself the day here has dawned fine, and the pits are going to be packed this afternoon. This has the makings of a fantastic meeting.

Well done to the Wanganui chronicle, and their speedway reporter who looks to be doing a good job. but in general newspaper never cared about speedway and still don't. only one the does is the palmy paper, but newspapers are all but dead now roll on 3pm That may be the case in the larger centres Superstock, but in the provinces the papers are happy to have local content, but these days they don't have the resources to go out and get it. All it took for me was an e-mail to the sports editor offering to supply copy. The outcome of that e-mail was that yesterday's Chronicle had speedway as the lead sports story taking up half the back page. They are sending a photographer out today to get some shots early in the meeting which they will use with the story I supply to them tomorrow for Tuesday's paper. The days of waiting for media organisations to approach us are long gone. Yes; we have a product we love, and think that everyone else will love too. But we are the ones who have to get out and sell that product. To get back on topic, let's not forget that Charlie understood that stockcar racing was about entertainment first and foremost, and that the winner wasn't always the bloke who got the most attention. Here's hoping the drivers at Oceanview this afternoon race with that same philosophy

11G Peter Rees was just too good today taking out the Charlie Berntsen Trophy for 2015, although 6V Dion Mooney was right up there but he didn't have much support from his fellow Wanganui drivers to keep the title in the Wanganui. A pretty good afternoon in the sun at the oval by the ocean. screen capupload img
