18th Season as Meeanee Track Announcer Speedway NZ seem to have missed that this weekends NZ Solo title is a milestone 74th staging. It's a long time since Alf Mattson took the first crown on the Kilbirnie track way back in 1930. No other class can compete with that statistic and it really should be recognized for the achievement that it is for NZ Speedway. Whoever should take the victory at Rosebank this Sunday will certainly place themselves in the Speedway history books.
Jason Bunyan will be looking to grab a piece of his own history with an unprecedented 10th title taking him ahead of the great Larry Ross from Christchurch. Former champion Grant Tregoning will want to reclaim the title but both riders will have to be wary of the new Kids on the block Jake Turner and Bradley Wilson Dean. Both Sean Mason and Dale Finch have multiple podiums and will certainly be a threat to the overall standings. Local hotshot Dylan Hancock is capable of upsetting the form book and we will all find out Sunday.
74th NZ Solo Bike Championship this Sunday Rosebank Speedway Auckland 12.30 Start

Thanks for the reminder We just might see Barry Brown there chatting up that old ...new guy in Snz getting a few good tips .. Only if you're on Kawau Island midway, only if you're on Kawau Island. If the first was in 1930, wouldn't this, the 2016 edition, be the 87th running? Or did we miss 12 years along the way somewhere.... And why was it SNZ's job to remember this? I saw another thread where it seems almost everybody has missed this title this year through no real promotion of the event? Barry B

Barry B 18th Season as Meeanee Track Announcer Barry if you look at the previous stagings on the SNZ website this is the 75th as they did miss some years out. Why is it SNZ's job? ? Because it is their Sport and doesn't a 75th anniversary have any meaning to them?. If this was the 75th NZ Superstock title I would put a $1000 on it that it would not go unnoticed. It wouldn't go unnoticed but the host track or even some of the top racers, but I don't imagine snz would get in on it. Many milestones have come and gone that they have not taken part in

I've just had a count up meeaneemic, and by my count it's the 75th running NEXT season (2016/17).
There was no title held in 1932, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1953, 1955 and 1957, 13 years missed since 1930.
2016 - 1929 = 87 years with 1930 being number 1 and 2016 being number 87, less the 13 years with no event = 74.
Math was one of my better subjects, but only because I was rubbish at most of the others!!! My math says the 75th running is in the 2016/17 season at Oreti Park.

This thread made me look at a couple of the other classes as well.
Midgets staged their first NZ title in the 1939/40 season, ten years after the Solos started, but since then have only dropped three years (compared to the Solos 13 years), 1942, 1943 and 1944. That means that they also hold their 74th title this season, also in Auckland, and will stage their 75th running NEXT season (at Nelson) along with the Solo Bikes (at Oreti Park).
You mention Superstocks Mike; did you know last season's title at Te Marua was the 50th running of that particular championship? I'm pretty sure SNZ didn't jump on that milestone either. As Ramjam said, to me it's up to the class and the track hosting the title to acknowledge and promote such a thing.

Barry B since you are the master of being pedantic, SUPERSTOCKS havent had 50 championships. stockcars maybe. As far as the official records go they have, as the records of the class that was formerly known as "Stockcars" were transferred and incorporated into "Superstocks" about a decade ago, the "Standard Stock" records incorporated into the new "Stockcar" class at the same time. Sorry woodart, I didn't think I was being pedantic......when you're talking milestones it's either the 75th running of the championship or it isn't. This year isn't. Mike also said "no other class can compete with that statistic", yet the Midget class has had exactly the same number of titles even though they kicked of a decade later. Barry B

I just realized the 52/53 title was not held due to rain. I also stand corrected that the Midgets are that close also. Thanks

Yeah, I was stunned that the Midgets were level-pegging at 73-all, so far, 74-all by the end of this season. It was only when I realized that the Solo's had dropped 13 years I went back and had a look. I do remember Western Springs wanting the Midget Champs next season to celebrate the 75th running of that title, but already had it this current season so Nelson now has that honour.
It's funny how speedway anniversaries work. Te Marua was able to celebrate "the 50th running of the NZ Superstock Championship" last season. 12 months later Stratford was able to celebrate "50 years since the first Superstock title was run". Unlike wedding anniversaries, where the actual wedding doesn't count as "1", the first running of a speedway event does count.

Only if you're on Kawau Island midway, only if you're on Kawau Island. It seems you are becoming a sea urchin ,Devonport for lunch ,Kawau Island ,are you on board for the super yatchs racing in the bay of Islands ,the local strumpets will meet you at the gang plank from the duke in Russell ..
