It only seems like a couple of months since the season began, but this weekend is the season finale at Supercheap Autos Oceanview Speedway. It's a two-day meeting, with racing on Saturday 30th April at 6pm, and resuming on Sunday 1st May at 1pm.
The feature event will be the final round of the Elite Mechanical Stockcar Challenge. Thanks to Mike Mooney at Elite Mechanical and Engineering $5000 in cash will be dished out after racing this weekend. Dion Mooney leads the series points at the moment, but the series is based on aggregate points over four rounds. That should mean that Mooney will attract attention on Saturday night, as he did on Sunday. And there's a $500 cash prize up for grabs as well for the best stirrer overall in the series. With his running battle with Mooney on Sunday, Dennis Black (82V) has put himself in the frame to win that, although Francis Potaka (52V) stirred up round 2 and if he's in the mood on Saturday night carnage could be the result.
Sunday's racing will be much more a fun day, providing opportunities for crew and sponsors to get out and have a skid, and the season will end with one of Oceanview Speedway's infamous demolition Derbies. Admission costs on Sunday have been reduced to $10 for adults and $20 for families.
It's been a really positive season at Oceanview, and we're expecting the 2016-17 season to be even better with the strong likelihood of new drivers and cars. The weather forecast for the weekend is looking good, so come and join us for a final speedway fix.

@ Go Slideways - Dion will be a very strong contender for Stockcar Competitor of the Year at the SNZ Awards. He's been on the podium at every championship he contested this season except for the Stockcar GP including winning the West Coast Championship. He probably would have been on the podium at the GP as well, had the officials given him a chance to clear the 14B car from his bonnet at a stoppage. He has teams-raced for the Vulcans. And given that one of the judging criteria for competitor of the year is the off-track contribution, the fact that he is Club Captain of the Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club won't do his chances any harm; the club is in the best heart it's been for many seasons.
Dion has a good lead in the Elite points which are as follows:
6v Dion Mooney 176 78v Mark Johnston 152 898v Sandy Flett 149 64v Ben Neilson 146 42v Steven Read 130 9v Chet Swan 126
With cash prizes of $2300 for first, $1300 for second and $900 for third in the series, there will be plenty of incentive to stop Dion Mooney, but to do that, you have to be right on your game, and be prepared to expect a serve in return. There's also a $500 cash prize for the best stirrer of the series overall, which Francis Potaka and Dennis Black have the inside running to win. Should be fun!

Should be a perfect track for the sidecar boys and girls again tomorrow night Pete. Aaron Rose and Amelia Stanley are just three points ahead of Mitch Byers and Tony Hislop over the season, and they're tied on Feature Race points, so it'll be great racing between the two combinations. 62V Craig Scott and Bryce Rose were in great form last Sunday, and with a night-time track the racing should be awesome.

There's a preview of this weekend's racing in today's Wanganui Chronicle, including points updates in all classes. There are some very close points battles in a number of classes, especially in Feature Race points, so many winners will not be decided until the final race in their class tonight. Many thanks to Pete from Go Slideways for the great photo of Dion Mooney and Dennis Black getting it on. It's a lovely day here in Wanganui, but it will cool down after sunset so dress warmly. The forecast for Club Day tomorrow is for another fine day, with a period of carnage and mayhem in the afternoon around the time of the Demolition Derby.

Supercheap Autos Oceanview Speedway is done and dusted for the season. There's a full report on the weekend's action in the Wanganui Chronicle. All that's left now is the Prizegiving/Cabaret on Friday 13th May at Wanganui Racecourse. Tickets can be purchased from committee members; $30 non-members and door sales, $25 members (pre-sales) and $15 youth includes a hot meal and band. Should be a top night as usual.

Thanks for all your coverage from Oceanview Speedway this season Inventory1.
Every track needs someone like yourself.
It's also great to see a recognised brand like Supercheap Auto's sees value in sponsoring a Speedway track.

Thanks for your kind words Percy.
As I've noted previously, all it took to get coverage in the local newspaper was an e-mail to the Sports Editor, the provision of copy that didn't need too much editing, ongoing communication in advance of stories appearing, and most importantly, meeting deadlines. The newspaper would send a photographer out to some meetings, and the sports blokes would get me to identify drivers, cars etc. Or when the photographer couldn't get there, people like our track photographer Eugene, Graham Hughes or Pete (Go Slideways) generously made their work available.
Most newspapers around the country have pruned their journalist staff back to a bare minimum, so sports such as speedway are unlikely to get a lot of coverage unless we provide it ourselves. Conversely, what sports editor isn't going to be happy if someone provides him with topical, copy-ready stuff, at no charge to the newspaper? All we need to do is identify someone within our club who can string a few words together, and who has a bit of spare time.
I've followed speedway since the 1960's, but it's only been in the last three years that I have become involved again, firstly as a sponsor, then running Facebook pages and now writing stories for the paper. I'm utterly hopeless with anything mechanical, but I have found a niche to make myself useful within the sport I love.
