Unfortunately, this is not the news Wanganui Warriors fans will want to hear.
The Wanganui Warriors Superstock Team will not be taking part in the ENZED/Dewtec New Zealand Superstock Teams Champs this season. Wanganui Stockcar and Speedway Club (WSSC) president and Warriors manager Daryl James made the announcement today.
“The Superstock class at Wanganui is rebuilding” he said. “We were hopeful of having enough Wanganui cars and drivers to represent the Club, but that hasn’t happened”.
“We have had some offers from out-of-town drivers, but it was always our first preference to have a completely Wanganui team”.
Mr James said that club members and drivers are incredibly disappointed. “Teams Champs is the highlight of the speedway season, and we are gutted not to be there.”
The WSSC sees this year’s decision as a one-off.
“We will have new cars on the track next season, and we will do everything we can to get a competitive team together” said Mr James.
In the meantime, WSSC members will focus on the Wanganui Vulcans Stockcar Team, who are entered in the New Zealand Stockcar Teams Champs in Gisborne in late February.
“We have a very experienced Vulcans team, that with a little bit of luck is good enough to win the Gisborne event. If we do that, we get to host the event next season, which would be massive for the Club.”
And Mr James had a message for the Warriors’ supporters and sponsors.
“We enjoy fantastic support from the speedway community and from our many sponsors for which we are hugely grateful. We will be back next season, better than ever”.

It's gut-wrenching, and I know the WSSC has tried really hard to put a team together. But we have to accept it's not going to happen this year, and start working now on a team for next season.

I would have though it would have been better to have a representative side in than out regardless of who was in it. Maybe those that were willing to race for wangas can fill spots in the all star line-up if required.

Real shame the Warriors are real underdogs. I wonder if Mooney, Sharky or Potaka are keen.Tigers are 1 short & Auckland may need help?

I noted on the weekend at the 240s no V cars which raised alarm bells with me. I think though that the Allstars should be good to go. Gutted to hear no Wanganui this year.....

You would have to ask team management.

Wanganui don't have a team but there were out of town drivers that put there hands up so I was asking who they were thank you Two of the out of town drivers the club had discussions with will be at Teams Champs with other teams. It serves no purpose to name names; it is what it is, and we are now 100% focused on having a competitive Wanganui Warriors team for 2018.

So 12 teams named for Palmy. It going to be hard for Warriors to break back in next year seeing they dropped out.

The promoter at PN Speedway was kept in he loop right through the process David, and actually helped us to try an assemble a team. It's not as though we dropped a bombshell on them, and I am sure they were working on Plan B as soon as they were aware that Plan A was looking like failing. There's no reason at all why the Warriors might not be back next year, and if Waikato continue to grow their numbers we could still see a 14-team Teams Champs next season.
