Unfortunately the people involved in the decision making process won't no the difference between midgets or stock cars or the difference in the following or fan base between the springs and waikaraka park. Speedway is speedway to the people making decisions. The plan in the first instance was to move the warriors to Eden Park to join rugby and create a single venue for both sports.
Those making that decision did not realise that the warriors and the game of league has a strong following in the working class areas of south auckland an area were Mt smart stadium is located in.
Makes sense of course for the warriors to have been located there from 1995 and into the future.
I personally believe the plan was and is,to move every thing they can to Eden Park to generate regular income and profit margins at the expense of other sports.
Simply put Eden Park will be granted consent to operate concerts all year round including summer studuim tours, potential large boxing events that feed into or around super rugby, test matches and domestic rugby.
This will see Eden Park increase its profits.
Cricket will move to western springs and speedway will be left out in the cold having the least options available that benefits the sport, competitors, the fans or the future of speedway in Auckland.

agree fully with the 1st half of your post axl1, but don't think the council could care less about increasing Eden Parks profits etc, seeing as they don't own it. The RFA was even talking about moving the Warriors to North Harbour at one stage. Strewth....how out of touch must they be. Think it's more of a case of them thinking (very wrongly imo) that they'll get more income from using the Springs for cricket, concerts etc, and Mt Smart for either concerts and culural festivals etc, or selling it off to developers. Can't for the life of me seeing Eden Park being used for concerts etc. They already get complaints every single time the place is used at night. The springs residents association are girl thingycats compared to the Eden Park lot I believe. Really the only solution for is for the Springs promoters, competitors, sponsors, and us the fans, to fight this idiocy.

Unfortunately as i have stated in a previous post cricket and concerts will clash based at the same outdoor staduim venue. Major staduim concerts in New Zealand occur November to March for bands who would be doing world stadium tours. A promoter bringing a band into New Zealand wont and can't afford to wait 5 days for a test match to finish as a band would have shows booked in Japan or Australia and would need to fulfill those commitments.
Separate cricket and concerts at different stadiums and you wont have a clash.
Eden Park has been actively pitching Australasian concert promoters and live nation in the US as a potential venue.

They do NOT own Eden Park so why would it matter to them if Eden Park made a profit or not?

Another story more about getting some column inches attributed to ones name - housing??!! really!!? has anyone of these guys read the Unitary Plan? If heritage is the argument, then that will be the outcome - nothing will ever change, and I might offer a thought on that. Western Springs is too small now (and has been for some time) for where the cars and drivers are at. The heritage card will essentially lock it down without an ability to progress the facility. What should be argued for is spend the development money on Western Springs and use it to make the track wider (without moving the pole line in) and longer with decent banking on the corners. While they are at it increase the pit area so the teams can actually operate properly, and increase the number of events to 25 per summer, and shift the curfew to 11.00pm or let them start at 5.00pm. They also need the ability to prepare the race track properly, so they might as well ask for the time to do that as well - oh, and 2 or 3 nights in a row for the big events with qualifying or international series etc. Western Springs is suffering from the same thing as most NZ Tracks - The cars have outgrown them. The cars will continue to develop - that is the nature of motorsport the world over, but the tracks are showing that they can't handle the speed, horsepower and tire tech any more. Drivers in this country don't 'momentum drive' nearly well enough to compete with the internationals because there is no banking or assistance in the tracks for this faster driving style to develop. Sprint cars are driving off the wings, but won't show their true potential until the tracks allow them to 'wing in' properly. Even Bay Park with is width is pretty much redundant on the outer half of the corner because it is too flat out there for anyone without a wing. Our guys in NZ have to 'back the cars in' as it is the only way to get around the corner carrying any speed - we have all seen at pretty much every track we go to these days what that driving style is doing to the track surfaces - not just Western Springs. The tracks go off pretty much after race 2, guys start braking stuff, cars start flipping out of ruts and the features descend into a 1 lane parade. In my opinion there should be a serious conversation about track development at all tracks - it will only be a conversation though, because who has the money to make any changes? Oh that's right, Auckland Council do. For gods sake don't rely on the heritage card, cause if you win that argument you will be stuck with it for ever, and will need to fill out 4 forms before you can fart there, not to speak of requiring a resource consent for earthworks every time you need to set the track. Regardless of what anyone thinks of the RFA or the Auckland Council, don't forget that the CITY is looking to spend some cash on speedway, and it is not an insignificant amount. Not since Perth (or before as far as I can remember) has a city council taken speedway seriously and signalled they want to do something good for the sport. Auckland is a little different than Perth in as much as they want to keep it in the city and not move it an hour away. If Western Springs stays (and there are a lot of good reasons for it to stay - but none of them about the advancement of the sport as far as I can see), then that would be great, but only if they start asking for what they really need, not just holding on to what they have - its out of date for the cars and drivers from what I have seen - if it stays they need to start thinking about the next 90 years. What is most interesting in all of this to me is the amount of people who have come out of the woodwork to jump on a bandwagon - not one of them a competitor. It is the silence from the drivers that has become deafening. If you Jafa's are going to be arguing for development money to spend on Western Springs, don't piss around - go the whole hog! Redesign the whole joint to include a fully enclosed stadium along with a multi level parking facility. Otago, with its 200K population, built a $220m roofed stadium. Surely with 1.4m people the numbers crunchers can make something work. Image being able to run meetings all year around, not constrained by inclement weather, or use it as a hybrid facility for concerts etc. Unlike rugby stadiums a lid on a speedway stadium would have less design/cost issue because columns could be strategically located around the infield thereby reducing roof span requirements. Parking seems to be a chronic problem, so the carpaking building could be leased out all week for additional income, which surely would appeal to the council as well. Like piggy Muldoon said - think big!

Over the years the Springs has been lucky enough to have good Promoters ,but the tide could turn quiet quickly,if there was a change in circumstances ,Why invest your money on a dead horse , A change in venue could be the end to such a great sport ,amalgamation with a group of dysfunctional members of a another club would upset the apple cart ,. Today you have to be realistic with the facts and figures ,not some dream that may enter ones head on the future of the sport and glamourous facility,s ...

Bob mcmurray knows his motorsport, used be part of mclaren set up very knowledgeable far not just speedway at the springs.. others like indycars , supercars obviously his passion formula 1 . he makes alot of sense, here nz many iconic landmarks eventually get torn down, if springs goes just another in list of legacies unfortunately come to the demise of yet another. over the years many speedways have bitten the dust. 90 years is something hold onto.. sure i hear springs outgrown itself in numbers and size many other aspects of the sport. if it goes elsewhere who say that is going to work either. until someone come up with solution truely best for the sport .. should remain at western springs for now.

The 'save our heritage and tradition' brigade similarly rambled on down our way in Wellington when Athletic Park closed in 1999. It was over a 100 years old. But after the cake tin opened, along with its new modern facilities and parking, the history buffs rantings quickly faded away.

Intersting comment coming from todays tv3 motorsport program is that waikaraka park will be redevolped the same as eagle raceway in Nebrska.
Anyone who knows eagle raceway will be aware it as a 1/3 mile high bank meaning the track will need to be turned around lengthwise to accommodate the track size, and as for the high bank, this will be totally unsuitable for stock cars, mini stocks etc.
Once again more smoke and mirrors from our council friends , but the other concerning comment was that as from after next year speedway will only be run at waikaraka park.
Goodbye Wesrern Springs it appears.

interesting that Nisbett from the RFA mentioned they are looking at Eagle Speedway in Nebraska as a model. That is a 1/3 mile high bank dirt track. Nice track I have seen USAC Sprintcars and Late Models there.

I reckon its good news,if the council do it right we will finally see some good midget and sprintcar racing in NZ.Im sure the Assc will make sure the track will be suitable for stockcars as well.Super saloons and saloons should benefit as well, makes sense just to concentrate on one track,to many restrictions at the springs anyway.
