Sunday morning turned out clear and sunny for Ellesmere speedways running of the 2018 NZ CTRA Sprintcar championship. But unfortunately heavy over night rain wreaked havoc on the race track.A late start got racing under way after track staff worked with some heavy machinery trying to get the track raceable. The heats put on some excellent racing for the large crowd of spectators in attendance but ruts and holes developed in the racing surface.Track maintenace man Midget car driver Dave Kerr brought out the clubs grader to get the surface a bit more level for final which certainly helped.Auckland based driver Matt Leversedge put in a great drive to win the title from a hard charging Jamie Duff who just grabbed second place from Ben Gilmore in the last few laps. With Luke Wetherell coming home in third place. One of the stand out drives in the sprint cars came from TQ driver Mark Morris in the Steve Duff junior car drove it like he had been in all season.Well done guys great racing under difficult circumstances. Also raced for at this meeting was the NZ Modified sprint champs 1st Vaugh Marshall (Invercargill) 2nd Clayton Phillips and 3rd Verndon McHaffie both from Christchurch.
