We have seen a few over the years ,and Bill is in my mind one of the best ... We have all enjoyed the caliber of competition presented over the last few years, but that has very little to do with protecting the future of the sport for future generations. And arguably sadly, PR is a big part of that these days. I suspect It's going to be difficult to obtain the support of the general public from here. Barry B

How are you supposed to get support from the public when you have a Drever on the list of front men .

If the nuts and bolts were part of the equation, around the negotiating table you may have a problem ,but they are not ,it is in the best interests of the paying public and the fans of speedway to shut the door and leave some one else,s dirty washing out to dry .

It's more than just the negotiating midway, this is the Auckland Super City Council, and everything they do is public, using public money. And Speedway needs millions of dollars of public money. Rate payer money. And among the many rate payers there's always a few that are anti anything. And a few more that are anti sport. And a few more again that are anti Motorsport, and the noise and air pollution it causes. They'll jump on anything and anybody to get their point across. SPL can do without supplying the opposition with any required canon fodder themselves. Let's hope all of the behind the scenes investigations and moves can take place without anymore hiccups, without anymore new and negative headlines, and Auckland can get itself a nice new Speedway. But one suspects there's a lot more twists and turns in this story yet, especially if new players are entering the game and previous deals and arrangements are pushed to one side. This has the look and feel of something that could take years, if not decades. Barry B

Must of hit a raw nerve ,iam pleased you bought the subject up about ratepayers money ,and propping up Speedway venues as you may well know there are some that just dont meet the criteria in the modern era . I bet your boots you wont be standing outside the gates watching just because you disagree with everyone and everything that goes on behind closed doors or some one that happens to have a few more shillings in the tin than the average Joe Blow that can pull a few strings in his favour ,for the fans of Speedway to enjoy ..

Basically the longer this issue goes on. unfortunately scenario we may not have speedway track Auckland. That's what is all fans and drivers alike want to know. pushing politics one side, what is future that after 2019-20 season will this be done and dusted. could this be fought out for many years to come, still have no track race on.

Axl1 is right on the money and so is BarryB, but in my opinion for different reasons. The fans were the most important part of this. Without them the sport dies no matter what PR strategy you put in place, you must take the high ground and you must take the fans - numbers count in any political endeavour. Axl1's observation is right on the mark.
The first mistake was telling the world that the springs was 'out of date' after the first campaign around 'springs is the best speedway in the world' which actually drew the fans into the discussion. The about face was the thin edge of the wedge.
The second mistake was having people talk in front of council on behalf. I will be very careful with this next bit because I have tremendous respect for Graham Standring and what he has achieves and done for the sport. Putting Graham in a position to speak from the heart but advocate for Colin Dale ultimately tripped up. It was a small thing, but using the word 'dangerous' in a public hearing at council closed the door on anyway back to Western Springs. I am sorry to say that, and Graham should have never been put in that position - it is not his fault. Axl1 would have had people passionate about the sport tell their story to a professional who could have spoken with conviction and sincerity but not fallen into a political trap.
The 'coup de gras' was the recent media outburst where Bill told the world he has been funding the sport to the tune of millions. This, right before a Council vote to approve $30M for a sport that SPL have declared can't stand on its own two feet.... I couldn't believe what I was reading.
BarryB's observation that this might take years if not decades is also correct, but the hammer will come down swiftly now. The years if not decades is the time it is going to take to recover from this.
Midway - you may hate to contemplate this, but the 'bogans' across town are the only ones in the game now (other than 'promoters' swooping around) and may well be in a position to be open wheel racing's best friend. They have Council over a barrel about the grandstand at WP and have been working that angle for 5 years and may be able to add some weight to finding a good outcome for the open wheel guys. I am not saying the answer is WP by the way - they just might be able to provide support to Council doing the right thing?

AxL1, Barry B and go fast have summed up the happenings in the SPL v's Council saga in a very professional manner. Shame SPL didn't use the same professional manner in their presentations to the council. I believe some people who have money get their own way using that as an influence, but sometimes you have to step back and look at the whole picture not just your own. Council land and ratepayers money come in to this. If they owned their own stadium and complied with all the consents granted to operate they then would have the upper hand but at the moment they don't, and the back room deal stabbing WP in the back hasn't helped their course at all. Can Sum up SPL dealing's in one AC/DC song. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap.

Good summary gofast.
I heard a reasonable view at the springs on saturday night The council and 1 million ratepayers wont allow $30M to be spent on a race track for 100 competitors and 3-4,000 hard core fans to hold 12 meetings a year then sit unused for the other 350 days of the year
Maybe a multi use stadium is the only way forward?
As someone posted a while back"Auckland doesnt need another outdoor stadium"
This whole saga could easily just disappear under the up coming elections,as no one will want to loose votes over this relatively minor issue(in their eyes)
Barry......Theres more show of some of us waiting outside the Pearly gates to open rather than Speedway ones

You sound a wee bit cautious there GO Past unusual for a Trumpet player in the band of knowledgeable know chaps One question though the Nz cricket council have publicly stated they have no intention of going or have no knowledge from there C E O about western Springs like wise the warriors going to Eden Park ,so as a poor rate payer on a gold card who would you rather see in the gates Nothing ...I thought your statement regarding Graham Standring was a little to say the least disrespectful ...

Yes, very cautious Midway... Not sure about trumpet player - just taking a big picture view which is probably best. Please take my apologies if my thoughts on Graham being put in a position to speak publicly offended. It was not my intention to disrespect him in any way and I have great respect for his achievements and what he does for new drivers and the sport generally - it was more of an observation of how the whole thing was handled. It is a hornets nest of competing agendas and it had to be expertly navigated.
Down but not out yet I think... Remember, it is an election year at council and the big public support for the place at the end of last year had an impact - if SPL can get the fans back behind them it would be a brave politician to ignore that. The question is if they can get the fans back on side after the about face? And the bigger question (if we go back to the big picture) is will it make a difference when the real problem is Eden Park and always has been. The whole waterfront stadium charade has been to show the residents around Eden Park are holding a $1.5B gun to the head of all Auckland Rate Payers to abandon the 'garden'. If the focus goes back on an Eden Park upgrade with cricket having to move as the most cost effective and best solution, then we will all know there was really nothing anyone was going to do to stop this whole farce.
