Been reading in the Herald that a Speedway driver is in critical condition after the racing at Western Springs on Saturday night. Not sure who it was but my family and I wish him a quick recovery and his family wish's.

Last I heard the drivers condition had been stabilised
The media coverage is incredibly disappointing. You'd have thought near on 20,000 fans through the gate would have been a worthy news article but I haven't seen a thing on the major news networks. It's the same old story with our media. Only interested in crashes.

Surely this far more important than reporting on the meeting itself, at this stage. Moreover not a single word of concern from SPL on either their web site or their Facebook. No comments on the Open Wheel Forum either. Incredibly disappointing alright!

Naming the driver will not do him or his family any good at this stage, its called "please respect their privacy in this difficult time"

No comments on the Open Wheel Forum either. Incredibly disappointing alright! Calm down Phil I don't have an issue with media reporting the incident provided they also report when positive things happen in our sport. Some of our tracks in smaller population areas receive outstanding media support but for the most part the only time you hear about speedway is when something negative happens. That 20,000 filed through the gates Saturday night after what happened in the two weeks prior was a newsworthy event. Given public interest in stadium developments it was a bona fide news story on it's own and should have been reported. Yes, media focus was on Friday's event but if it was good enough to report the Warriors crowd it's good enough to report the same crowd at speedway. Regarding your compassion less request for an update, I'm sure such an update will be provided when the family are ready to provide one. If SPL were to make a "best wishes" statement they'll receive 1,000 requests for an update and will get the blame for not providing one when the family may not wish to provide an update or indeed may not have an update to provide. The reason for my comment is despite reporting fact, the article and indeed the situation carries an undercurrent that we don't need to discuss. My update addresses that aspect. Like everyone I'm eagerly awaiting what will hopefully be some positive news. I need to make mention of the response effort to the incident and indeed any incident at the Springs. I've been to near on 50 dirt tracks around the world and the Crash Crew at Western Springs is the best I've seen. Their professionalism and expertise is without parallel. When you race at Western Springs you're in the best of hands. Also, there were a number of people behind the scenes who went above and beyond the call of duty to help out including Springs security.

This is particular sensitive issue anyone wanting know injured driver should leave it out on public forum.. so media coverage is what you expect. individuals on here need take good look if it was someone in your family, you want every single person knowing.. just ghoulish and lacks sensitivity at this time.
I do agree that media only seems centre on crashes and subsequent closure, none the positive side of the sport.. bring back Jon Addison or Alan clark. who were the best in the field of reporting speedway articles for daily newspapers.

Percy,
Fact is a vast majority of spectators go to speedway to see crashes...Those of us in the sport would like to think otherwise...but this is reality. Why is MMA so popular...and the old days of the gladiators. Injuries and carnage sell papers...sad but true. But I do agree that injured drivers should not be named publicly. That is up to the driver/family when/if they are ready.
As for highlighting the 20,000....why is this big news? According to SPL they usually get 130,000 spectators each year....from 12 event = approx 11,000 average. This means 20,000 for big meeting is just run of the mill for you guys...or are those figures wrong? The Warriors deserved the news as the smashed the doggies...and tickets were free...In saying this, I would love to see more reporting on Speedway. Good to see PitsTV helping by getting coverage on TV.
John
FYI - to the driver and family concerned. Thoughts are with you and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Only interested in crashes. Yip the media are scum. After all the reaction to closing WS they cover Stus crash as that's what sells them advertising space. A couple of points here. Calling the media "scum" in a monitored forum is really clever and definitely a way of getting them onside....NOT. Secondly a paper like the nationally circulated NZ Herald obviously doesn't send a reporter and a photographer to such events. A shame yes, but it's been like that for a long long time. However if you build up a relationship with them, advise them when major events were on and without fail provide them with a story and pictures overnight they will generally run them. You have to understand them and work with them, not insult them. How often does any outside media get invited along to Western Springs? A few years back I tried to get a season pass for a General Motorsport writer who also did radio stuff at the same time I was doing my Speedway radio stuff. SPL would give him a one-night pass if he committed to a set night, but would not give him a season pass so he could pick a weekend he was free to come along and see what all the fuss was about. Very short sighted attitude towards mainstream media. And expanding on reporting, obviously the media in general don't have people on the ground at all sorts of places. Police scanners and the like advise them of what is going on around the place. And everybody knows bad news sells newspapers, but to call them scum for doing their job? There job IS to sell newspapers, and advertising, and in this day and age that's difficult enough anyway. Speedway people in general need to be less precious about their sport. It's no good in the long run blaming everybody else (including the media) for any woes our sport might have.
