I see one of the items to be discussed under general business at the upcoming SNZ AGM is the status of Production Saloons as a national class.
Statistics show a 20% decline in registered numbers in the two years since the class was elevated to national class status. Numbers have gone from 167 registered drivers down to 133.
50 drivers who were registered Production Saloon drivers in 2017/18 did not re-register in 2018/19. The distribution was even across the country with pretty much all contracting tracks affected.
So the question is has the elevation to national class status seen numbers sharply decline or is there something else going on in the class causing a decline in numbers?

The fun factor has gone out of the class, so people are spending more on their cars, others can't see the sense.

Dear I suggest that budget classes are sensitive to the local economy, we may have stumbled on economic performance indicator.
I might write the minister of Finance and suggest a Production Saloon index be added as an economic indicator.
God, so early in the off season and I'm this bored already.

Hi I agree with all the above threads.i have been a car builder and racer for over 30 years in this class. The budget and fun has gone. It should never have happened. All the young racers do is flag race and buy expensive cars.it should go back to what the intent of the class is.my 2 cents worth dave 6n PS and I still race Buget

21st season on the mic Where are these expensive cars you talk about Greypower?. I haven't seen any at Meeanee and if they have been there they certainly don't dominate the racing. 22b Denton Hodgkinson has one of the fastest Proddies I have seen and the car was built by him for just $5000. I am a massive fan of the class and was expecting HB to have grown in numbers to where we should have 20-25 cars on race nights. I'm not convinced the move to National status is the reason because simply if you are not that inclined as a Driver to be at that level you simply won't enter the events which seems to be the case at the titles Meeanee has run. Some cars who race club nights don't show at the bigger meetings. Are Promoters and or Clubs pushing the class forward as an entry level senior class or just leaving it to the drivers and Reps themselves??. In hindsight 20 years ago Youth Ministocks should not have been introduced, the path should have been Productions meaning at the age of 17 they would be straight into the senior ranks if desired with no change of racecar or outlay. Think of the hundreds Speedway would still have in the Sport and not lost due to costs or whatever. A massive percentage of Youth drivers fall away and never race Senior Speedway but thats just my opinion and i'm digressing.

It s been the same story for so many budget classes over the years, streetstox, stanardstox, ministox, and limited saloons. Each year they all creep sloser and closer to the big brothers and sisters they tried to break away from.
Its the weakness of having the drivers making the rules. Very socialist and cosmopolitan and inclusive, but tends to be narrow sited.
Whats the chances of drivers agreeing to no rule changes for say five years.

A massive percentage of Youth drivers fall away and never race Senior Speedway but thats just my opinion and i'm digressing. disagree with most of this. there isnt a sport in the country where young fellas dont drop out that im awear of. so in that regaurd i dont think ministocks are a to bad idea. when i was in school i was playing 5 differant sports. i could only carry on with 2 after. one of which hockey i made first 11 and havnt played since 1st 11. i believe speedway does a much better job or retaining young guys than rugby or netball does.and those sports are new zealand sport funded sports. and you can get ministocks under 5k. would much prefur tracks to run adult ministocks so they dont need to sell the car at age 17. can carry on racing if they chose until there financials improve or they pick up a new hobby. i dont like two classes of ministocks racing on a night as much as the next guy. but you have had so much more people stepping up from ministocks and adult ministocks that to me is enough of a posative to keep status quo. and precy in that time. what percantage has speedway new zealand and club fees gone up? because these guys are always gonna be hit the hardest by those changes.

Denton won the North Island title this year and am not sure he went to the NZ's due to personal reasons.

IMO a Track Announcer should give EVERY class the same enthusiasm or else they might as well quit because they are not doing the job correctly.

I don't think a 20% drop is anything to worry about, Most classes have cycle of growth and drops. I know Huntly Has 1 returning driver and 3 new cars hitting the track this coming season. All race cars cost money whether budget or cream of the crop race cars. I personally don't think a good group of productions is boring to watch at at. They provided some good racing at Rotorua's Easter meet. Numbers certainly help through. I would say that in the south Island there tracks for that class would be a lot drier than what some NI tracks provide the Class.

Spot on there , nothing short of a hotdog class, followed closely by streetstocks at some tracks . While its good to see a decent field of streetstocks racing and entertaining at some tracks , its nothing short of boring when you have too watch a handful of them trying to flag race.

Maybe speedway tracks need to put more articles in the speedway programmes so we have a bit of reading when the hotdog classes hit the track. Half dozen trips to the hotdog stand gets a little tiring .lmao [ 3 for productions and 3 for streestocks ]
