A massive shout out to Stu, Mike, Malcolm and Dave in the comms box this long w'end. Well done guys! Stu's race calling has come a long way over the years, and is very good. The team kept us all informed, and Malcolm's and Mike's interviews on sat night while the track was getting work done were magic. Thanks guys, your efforts were and are greatly appreciated.

I wish I could agree with you, but In the grandstand it was impossible to understand anything the announcers said as the public address system seems to get worse every year and it was just a jumbled shouting match , that seemed to never stop and just went on and on. No results during the nites and what happened to the results being put up on the big screen, very disappointing. With the number of cars being disqualified or taken off (The refs must have had a real bad day, as I have never in all the many years attending this event seen the Refs ruin a meeting more than they did over last two nites) No explanations to the public, just who's next, who are they picking on this race, as they were very inconsistent and in many cases dam petty and pedantic in their rulings, and worse still totally inconsistent. Well done you guys in the box, you managed to wreck what should have been a good meeting?

This was intended to be a "thank you guys, well done in trying circunstances" and you come along and pregnant dog and whine, and try to ruin the intend of the post. I expect you to be in the ref's box next year, i'm sure SNZ will love to have a ref of your calibre in the box.

Was much better on the third [and final] night due to the sound being vastly improved. The problems with the commentary during qualifying was not the commentary team, but the sound system itself. On the final night the crosses backwards and forwards between Mike in the pit lane and Mal on the infield were great, with Stu anchoring the whole show from the box.

You explain the sound system in the grandstand was atrocious then blame the commentators and the referee because you couldn't understand what was going on!!! I guess there's one in every crowd. Appreciated Tapped & Barry and also the aknowledgement of my race calling improoving over the years. I like to try and describe the race as if you arent watching it as best as possible. I grew up admiring ARA & TLee on radio trackside with my grandad and that's where my style I guess comes from.
As for the audio/sound we in the box can only but control the overall levels which we soundchecked the whole arena on Friday and it was spot on. So basicly if its loud asf in the Grandstand and quiet on Start line I can crank it up but then you'll have it well and truely booming in the stand. I believe the Arena are in the process of redoing all their audio system because even rugby etc are having issues.
Also results and points were given provisional as soon as they crossed and then once I had the official handed to me I'd readdress and confirm that result and points and let known when there had been a relegation or DQ... my personal fav was the Rotorua v GB crowd wind up 🤣 The results on bigscreen / stream im unsure if they were used etc but again also not our department.
We also have zero coms or director aswell between Mike, Mal & I and soley work off knowning when eachother need to talk.
Overall I thought everything that was in the com team control went well and probably one of our best shows yet!

I’ll go 1 step further and say well done to everyone involved with this past weekend.
To put on basically a 3 full days teams event, and from the outside it looked always under control.
The racing capped off the weekend, some of the closest teams racing I’ve ever seen, no real walkovers.
I only watched via stream. Although we missed a bit, I’m still thankful I can watch this amazing event from over the ditch. I enjoyed the amount of pit interviews and coverage also.

There was one thing Stu, that I'll mention on here since I don't know when I'll see you again. It was on the second qualifying night, and you'd made an error when adding up the points in one of the races. 10 points out I think - you may remember it. When you corrected it you said your "late night maths" wasn't too good. I happened to glance at the clock. It was 9.25pm. For a young fella, you are using old fella excuses pretty early in your commentary career Barry B

For people to be able to hear commentary at speedway both during the breaks and during the racing require 2 things. Big horn speakers that cut through and are designed specifically for this sort of application, and when that's in olace, someone to operate the mixing desk to drop levels lower so that the audience is not blasted when there's no racing occurring. horn speakers are not expensive and require very little power compared with musical speakers. Stadiums like Arena Manawatu generally require both, but they should definitely be installing big horn speakers when they do their upgrade. And I imagine speedway at the arena is the largest client and therefore have a right to demand it. I do feel for promoters who i have seen over the years being told multiple thoughts on what is needed by supposedly qualified people. And they have to trust them. But at least if they get an upgrade, make sure if it's not fit for purpose you can pull it out and get your money back to give to the right people to do the job oroperly. Speedway is the only outside event in NZ with significant audio requirements that DO NOT have someone either mixing or at least monitoring from the spectators position. Imagine going to a rock concert, and the sound engineer is in a portacom out the back?! And it's not like speedway spectators are at a free show - they pay top money and deserve the resoect of that reflected in the services they receive for their ticket price . I really feel for all the spectators who couldn't hear the commentary that was a lot more audible on the Livestream, and therefore missing crucial info. Another speedway issue that hasn't changed in 30 years. At least we got the FM improved significantly over the 3 days and minimised the level changing on the feed I cant wait for next year and the possiblity of a 3peat. The stats on teams winning 2 in a row is growing. And personally I thought that was a great weekend of racing and entertainment, enhanced by some superb super saloon action. Shame the forecast for Woodford Glen this weekend is fairly iffy. I'm hanging out for more of that action.

I didn't get the stream but, and I'm sure I've said this before, Stu is now in the rare bread of great race callers. I know Stu and I have talked about T Lee before and he is a great race caller of less horsepower. There are far worse role models for potential race callers to model themselves on the the great Tony Lee. Stu is prob the equal best, with Paul H, researched commentator around. The title meets I've done with him, he used to turn up with 2 or 3 copies of his research to give to umm other talkers who's idea of research was to look at the program, and I thank him for those times lol

I'm 57 in a few weeks Barry, can I use those excuses Once again, thoroughly enjoyed working alongside you Mike capturing the many interviews that we covered over the three days. On Monday I covered over 12,500 steps, on my Fitbit, getting around the pits with a 3 kilogram camera on my shoulder. Not too bad for a 71 year old.

Looking back maybe I wasn't tired maybe I was just trying to hold some sort of hope for our Panthers! Really appreciate that Al! No one can ever get away with umm talking as well as you use to in Welly mate! The PC brigade has well and truly moved in haha.
