Night one done and dusted. Racing was pretty clean through all nine heats, apart from a couple of first lap restarts, there wasn't a yellow light all night. Qualifying always throws up one or two hard luck stories, this year there were three; all in the Red group. Both the 11s and 32gm cars suffered broken rockers and 24c had a vibration somewhere deep in the engine. This left only 5 cars mobile, all were guaranteed to qualify but this didn't stop 1nz and 18c going "at it" for the 2nd and 3rd heats. If these two draw close to each other tomorrow then there will be action. Conversely things couldn't have been closer in the Blue group. Every car finished every race and at the end of it all four cars were tied first on points, with only two points separating first and sixth. Cars through from this group are 3nz, 5gm, 12s, 68h, 12s and 36w. The young local rookie topped the Green group in the 9s car with 11a and 96h tied in second one point back; 54gm, 21a and 22s rounded out the top 6. The big talking point in this group was the failure of the 71s car to qualify after crashing out in his first heat. 18 cars are now in the final with two more to progress from the repechage tomorrow night. 22c and 47gm will be off the front row for that but will have the 71s car breathing down their neck, should be an interesting start to the night. Three 20 lap races with 20 cars will be a challenge for the track. No-one really looked like they were getting more out of the surface than anyone else tonight so the grid positions and a good slice of luck are going to have as much a bearing as anything.

And I feel I must congratulate Stratford on an exceptionally well run meeting. Mods weren't the last race of the night but after a 6pm start and 9 heat races, we were all done by 8.45.

Has bunter retired from racing? I think he has a recurring back injury so Trout said .

very little passing. with twenty cars on track tonight, its going to be pretty. pretty dusty. 3 wins = 60 points. I'll predict 42 points will be good enough for a podium, maybe even the win unless a big crash takes out half the field in one heat or another. Barry B

car numbers should have been capped to top 14 for finals, have suffered thru too many twenty car dust storms. would have added importance to qualifying as well.

For some reason I've thought 16 cars for the finals for some years now, although that was more back when they ran more often at the likes of Rotorua and Nelson. But 20 Modifieds around a few of our tracks, including Stratford, is definitely a few too many for both of the reasons you mention. Barry B

Is it time yet for my annual rant about tracks using the 3-heat format for non-contact classes?
I've been biting my tongue all week!

Heat 1 big movers
1nz grid 20 to 7th (+13) 71s grid 16 to 4th (+12) 9s grid 14 to 6th (+8) 21s grid 18 to 10th (+8) 68h grid 19 to 12th (+7) 3nz grid 8 to 1st (+7)
21s and 68h were largely due to the 6 cars that DNF'd. Your genuine movers are 1nz, 3nz, 9s and 71s

But if they ran the 5-heat qualifying format Percy, they wouldn't be able to run the "King of the Mountain" second-tier competition for the four non-qualifiers. Barry B

Actually I'll go 3nz to get 3nz again. I think he's on 27 points with a 1st and a DNF, and has grid 6 in the third heat? Barry B

Not a hard title to analyse for the title! With 1nz off grid 1 you would think he wins and if that is the case the only driver who can beat him is 124s. 124s would need to get from grid 20 to 4th to force a run-off.
There were 3x DNS in heat 2 and 4x DNF so at best 124s might gain 7 points via vacant grids in which case he would still have to advance 9 positions (and that's on a best case scenario).
There is a good chance 68h and 54gm will tie given points and grid draw. If 68h can get to 2nd (which he should given 11a starts off grid 2 and DNS heat 2), 71s would only need to advance 1 spot to tie. There are two DNS cars ahead of 71s in heat 3, so he is looking good to beat 68h and 54gm for a podium.
Using the same scenario, 124s would need to get to 11th to force a run-off if 68h and 54gm finish 2nd and 3rd.

Unofficially 199h Samantha Lane has won the KoM with 10 points from 28v Ricky Dykstra on 8 points.

Barry B They seriously didn't run an event for 4 cars!?
