This thread is a work in progress which will follow the return to the track of the ex-Dave Salmon #7 CAE Sprintcar. My current info is;The car was built in 1976 by Joe McQuarter in Whangarei using CAE plans ( Jim Culbert Automotive Engineering USA). It was one of several (6?) CAE Sprintcars in NZ around the early seventies. Other CAE cars were owned by Willie Kay, Gary Murch, Bob Fulman. The car runs a worked 283 Chev and puts out approx 450>550Hp. It uses a forklift radiator. The car is complete & running. It requires a bit of a spruce-up rather than a comprehensive restoration. Grant Mytton is the current owner of the car and as a mark of respect for Ian Easton (JacJac) reaching the beginning of his 5th decade of motorsport, Grant has offered the debut drive of this car to JacJac on behalf of the fans of JacJac. JacJac said that he felt "truely honoured" & would love to drive it. I think that it's a great gesture on Grants part and I'm sure, like me, many people will look forward to seeing JacJac in this car giving it heaps next season! PS: As an added bonus - it doesn't run any mufflers! Loud as. This is what the car looks like now. The wing is original and was made to original plans which came with the car. The next pictures came with the car & I don't know much about them... If anyone has any information or photo's of this car, please post it here. Thanks. Please post any info on this car here. Thanks. Cheers, Go Slideways

This may help. The photos of 7A were probably taken around 1996 when Warren Wilson was with HISCONZ. The second pic of 7A the guy with the cap is Warren Wilson who owned the car at the time. I think it was the CAE chassis but Warren made the car into 7A Mod similar to 7A Mod original car. Later he restored the car to the CAE sprinter, last photo (blue No. 7) A short time time later he sold it. Don't know who to. Other pics no idea. There are others members of HISCONZ who will remember better than me.

Youre corect with your info there johnf. The last photo was taken at the Kumeu Hot Rod Festival some years ago in the days Warren Wilson was considering the formation of a vintage club dedicated to early modifieds and sprintcars. The dude sitting in the chair looks familiar to me

Very late reply to this thread and not sure who has the sprintcar now, but i was the person mentioned in thread who brought the remains of it from Dave Salmon before he passed away and firstly as stated used it to recreate an early modified then stripped it down again and rebuilt it back as a C.A.E copy and tribute to Dave Some where along the line some one tried to make up false history about it, the facts are it only ever raced as a sprintcar with a 6 cylinder motor and the 283 in it was installed when Dave ran it briefly as a modified, and there was no way the engine made that much horsepower, i know cause i rebuilt it and know what's inside it. As for the wing that was actually built by some one i worked with for one of Frank Irvine's stock cars but never used. It was a neat little car though and only sold it because my son was due to enter the world. Twenty years latter and I'm still messing around with old speedway vehicles, next big project will possibly be restoring and old jag Super saloon. Chris Salmon if you read this and want any photos of sprintcar when i restored it let me know through here. Warren

Thank you for the history, the car is currently sitting in our garage and now owned by Brad Quigley. The car is for sale but as Brad also runs a Modified and has no time to run both. Would be great to see it back out on the track.

Warren That would be great thanks I would really appreciate any photos you have of this car!! I checked this thread regularly to see if anyone replied but gave up after a while till I had a look tonight!! You don’t happen to still have the photos that mum passed onto you when she sold it to you by any chance? I remember spending a lot of time as a kid in the shed with him when he worked on it, maybe that’s why today I restore classic cars for a living.
