I raced at the very last meeting at Waiwakaiho, New Plymouth in the 99P stockcar powered by a Sidevalve V8 Pilot? engine that I had borrowed from Jim Edwards. The original Dodge engine, from the Modified the stockcar was built from, had finally expired.
I won the very last race that was ever run at Waiwakaiho, must have been April 1969? Was getting real foggy by the end of the night. Possibly the first race that I ever won!
The following season I repowered the Stockcar with the 221V8 Fairlane engine.
As for the Figure 8 races at Tokoroa, they were awesome fun. Always a ding dong battle with Graham "Snoopy" Smith. Great Sunday afternoon racing. I would leave Palmerston North shortly after 8 am for the drive to Tokoroa. The team at Jamiesons Garage had worked all night on the "Tank" getting it prepared after Saturday night in Palmerston. When I turned up it was usually loaded back on the trailer and ready to go.
Talk about a dedicated team working most of the night while I went home to have some sleep!
Will try and find some time to dig out photos of Tokoroa. For a couple of meetings they tried wood shavings for the track surface!
