Kia ora 29S Awesome informative thread. Just wondering if it would be possible to give us an estimate of the cost of the materials at stages during your project please. I guess we could add up your hours at the end of the project (and those of anyone else who works on the car) and multiply those hours by $75 - $100 to get the cost of the labour. I am interested in the cost of building stock to buying one secondhand. Thanks again for the awesome thread. Kia kaha bro!.

Kia ora Gibbo 13P That may be what you pay your labour, but what do you charge them out at? Anyway you get the gist, I am interested in an estimate of the value of building a stockcar. One of the main savings of doing it yourself is usually the labour anyway which is why it can be separated from the materials, engine etc.. 29S - I know you are busy enough already so don't worry if the costing side is a no go - all the best and thanks again for an excellent thread.

That would be the charge out rate. The dearest labour rate I have seen was $75 incl GST and that was at a BMW dealership.

I am keeping a detailed record of what everything is costing to build the car. I would also like to know what it costs to build. At some stage I will post up some costings but it is not worth doing it at the moment as I have parts on the bench that you have not yet seen. Will mostly probably give a rough costing when the car is at the rolling stage.

Most engineering shops charge out around $40 p/hr up to $65. at least that would be the case in taranaki wouldnt it 29s. although looks like you can do most yourself.

I have no idea what engineering shops charge out as I do most myself. The stuff I do get made for me (bellhousing, engine plate, front axle etc, I just get done on a price per item basis. On that subject, if anyone out there needs any parts made give Rob a call at Lintern Engineering on (06) 2785468. He has made my bellhousing and engine plate and should be starting on my axle soon. He does an awesome job too.

Update: I contemplated whether or not to put this report on, but since this thread is about my experience building a Stockcar I thought I better. Just don't give me too much nuts! Dad came up again today with the plan being to get the rear coil overs mounted to the diff. This is the one job I haven't been looking forward too and this turned out to be one of those days where nothing seems to go right. The plasma cutter was playing up (needs a new tip), the drill press wouldn't drill through the nuts that I wanted to use as spacers on the mounts (high tensile) and the welder started playing up too! Anyway, we eventually got the mounts made and set about attaching them to the diff. The easiest way to do this was to block the chassis on the ground with the bumpers set at the correct height, sit the diff in the car and put wheels on it. This way we could tack the mounts on and know for sure that we had enough clearance against the chassis rail and the tyres. I only tacked one mount on as I knew that a could take measurements off that for the other side. Pulled the diff out and fully welded up the mount. Went to do the other side and it was at this point that I realised we had the diff upside down! Yes, the breather was at the bottom and the drain plug was at the top. I have now cut the mount off so we still have a diff with no coil over mounts. But at least we have the mounts!!! (after 8 hours work) You always make one mistake and I am glad we have already done it and it wasn't anything too major. ;D We were getting there!

to answer cookster's question you can set the chassis hight to what you want. most cars are around the 100mm mark off the ground, then you weld your bumpers on between 330mm and 380mm (to the center of the bumper) as that is the max and min hight of the bumpers. most weld them at 350mm so the they can raze or lower the car for set ups when finished.
