will always be a problem like most sporting events, normally only a few, ban it, stupid idea will only make it worse, just needs to be policed well/better, obviously alot harder at bigger events

The problem with "purchase / consumption in controlled areas" is that it doesn't stop the drunks getting out and about in the public areas still causing a nuisance of themselves.

Speedway tracks need to have better security around and not just guards that stand and watch the racing instead of doing their jobs........

I know its gonna sound mean and disrespectful to the security guys, but having worked in the security industry and at sporting venues in the past.
while most are nice people just earning a few extra $$$ for the family, most unless trained are unaware of what they should be doing and why. let alone HOW to do what they are paid to do.
if you look at the guys working the door at a pub in town. they have more presence and control over a crowd than the guy who checks to make sure you locked the office door on your way out.
they dont get the right people for the job, having more of them wont make any difference:(

Agree completely Speedway tracks need to have better security around and not just guards that stand and watch the racing instead of doing their jobs........ The problem is that they don't have anymore power than any other member of the public. It's the way it is in NZ. And yes, I was involved in the security industry for several years.

I have been involved in doing event security for rugby over the last 4 years and well at least with the rugby you have the police as back up if you need to escort someone out of the grounds which I have done.

why do people pay heaps of $$ to come to an event and then get drunk and can't remember what happened the next day?
same with concerts!
i just dont understand the need to drink and get drunk in a public place.
are they trying to be "the cool guy"?!?!

Unfortunately we couldn't make it this year as we decided to go to ACDC concert in Auckland which from what I have read on both threads relating to this subject was very tame and majority of people well behaved considering but from what i've read about the behaviour I would not expect it at a speedway event. Our family has never been to the palmy teams due to always having other events to attend, we would still like to go even after reading these comments and really hope that by next year the problem is sorted out **fingers crossed**

I dont mind a drink (in fact i i love a drink or 2 o 3 or) but i feel that speedway is promoted as a family event and therefore should be without drunks in the crowd. I know that i have had the odd one at a speedway event but kept it quiet and not been a blatent fool as i have seen in the past at major events. just my 2 cents worth

For me the question is, "How many folk require alcohol to be available and consumed at SNZ meetings, to support those meetings?" Those that do enjoy a beer (or two) as part of their speedway fix but do so inoffensively, how would you feel if it wasn't allowed? Would you still support speedway?
While we might lose some patrons, is it possible we might gain more than we lost. 'SPEEDWAY, alcohol free family entertainment'?
It's likely the biggest opponants OF ANY ALCOHOL FREE POLICY would be the licence holder who is profit focused.

Great reply Murray. I agree - if alcohol was banned at speedway meetings there would be a reduction of alcohol dependent patrons however you would get an increase of patronage from alcohol free patrons. Unfortunately you cannot have alcohol moderation in a speedway event without those that abuse it - simple.

Why is that such a minority screw it for the majority. Theres nothing better than having a beer "a beer" when all is over and cars are loaded. chill out time - plan the repairs - spin the yarn. surely it would be easy. (im assuming here that we are talking of drivers and teams?) breath test drivers exiting - doesnt need to be law enforcement - just a minuted club rule - you are caught over a limit you stand down. excess is always a big prob in the targa they (the cops) breath test before racing... im not sure with this thread where eveyrone is thinking? croud, crew, drivers, kids behind the shed?

6m, this thread is in relation to the handling of alcohol during the meeting, not afterwards when drivers/crews may have a brew in the clubrooms or pits.
