This coming Saturday night will see the running of the 2010 John Webstar memorial at Auckland's Waikaraka Park Speedway. It will be the first and only time these big 410 winged warriors at this venue as they normally run across town at western Springs. To date, there have been 11 enteries confirmed but organisers are still working on a few more. Heading this years line up will be current New Zealand Modified Champion Jamie Fox driving the Salter Cartage #63a Kriner Maxim. Fox will advantage on the rest of the field as Waikaraka Park is his home Speedway where he has won a truck load of feature events and is also a home crowd favourite. He will be joined by 19 year old sensation Ryan O'Conner whom is hot off a double victory last weekend in the Manawatu in the #8a Salter Cartage/Pro Floors Kriner Maxim. ................ click here to read more www.sprintcarworld.co.nz/release.asp?NewsId=35813Cheers

Final decision will not be made on this until after Speedfest on Thursday night. Having never raced a sprintcar before I find it laughable that people would rate him as the favorite even if he does race! I think laps in the class would count more than home track advantage!! If he does run, please don't expect him to come out and threaten the top runners as this is highly unlikely and would be expecting a tad to much for a guy sitting in a car for the first time. I am sure he will enjoy the experience though if he does end up running the meet! Thanks To Ron Salter for the kind offer which ever way it goes. I hope you sprintcar fans out there appreciate what sort of guy you have in this man, what he does for the sprintcar class is unprecedented and we would love to have him involved with the mods!!

It has been interesting to see how quickly Tama Arapere adapted to a sprintcar. I can see no reason why "The quick blue Fox" would take any longer. It will be certainly interesting to hear how he goes if it happens.

Foxy's opposition will no doubt be a little stronger (more experienced) in Auckland that what Tama's met in Wellytown to date..........both top Mod drivers though.

I don't think it's so much expecting him to win. It's just the fact that one of NZ's best Modified drivers, and the current 1NZ, is running in one of NZ's best prepared Sprintcars. That's a good show anyday.

Now that Speedfest is done and dusted we can officially confirm that Foxy will be campaigning the #63 Salters Cartage Maxim Sprintcar as this weekends John Webster Memorial meeting at Waikaraka Park. John helped Foxy a great deal in the early days when Foxy first started racing and this meeting has been one we have been keen to compete at for a number of years. Ron Salters generous offer to allow Foxy to run one of the strong Salter team cars is and amazing opportunity that is to good to turn down and the Fox team would like to thank him for his generosity. Foxy is looking forward to putting his best foot forward, hopefully without getting in the way of the more seasoned drivers. The team Fox modified crew will use this opportunity to hang around the Salters team like a bad smell and try to pick up on any and all tips from one of the best teams in the game! Sorry in advance if we get in the way!! LOL! See you Saturday!

Great to hear - it will be awesome to see foxy in a sprinter, and hopefully he can get through the first corner battles and get a few laps under the belt. A couple of meetings into it and I expect he would be a lot closer to the mark, but off the bat is a big ask.
It will be interesting to hear what the difference in costs are between the two cars - Foxy has the best of the best in the mod, and I'mn sure Ron has the best of the best in the sprinter. I'm guessing they will be pretty close in cost?
Either way, another great reason to get along and check out the webster meeting

So - how did Foxy get on in the sprinter first time out? Drove it like he belonged there, just hope we don't lose him to sprintcars. He didn't drive it like he stole it though! Certainly kept things in reserve where he could have made an overtake move, but backed out. So smooth though, very, very impressive.

Was highly impressed with Fox. Very clean lines for a first night out, didn't look out of place at all in the mid-front of the field.
Would make a good addition to the Sprintcar class.

On the few rare occasions I have seen Brian McPhee and/or Tama Arapere pilot McPhee’s sprinter at Te Maura, they seemed to have adapted to the sprinter like ducks to water in relatively no time at all, so its not surprising to read similar comments here about Foxy.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Foxy found the sprinter easier to handle than a Modified.
God bless Ron Salter.

Thanks again to Ron and Natalie Salter for allowing Foxy the opportunity to have a skid in the #63a Salter Cartage Maxim sprintcar. Also like to thank Steve (Team Salter Pitcrew chief) and his boys for giving Foxy a great car to drive straight off the blocks. These boys know their business and it was a privilege to see them in action. Foxy had 3 objectives he wanted to achieve. 1/ See first hand the difference between racing a top of the line sprintcar and a top of the line modified. 2/ as a first timer, make sure he stayed out of the way of the other guys racing so he didn't ruin their nights. 3/ bring the car home without a scratch on it. When you are trusted enough to run someones $100k machine the last thing you want to do is abuse the privilege. Foxy drove conservatively and within himself so as to make sure this 3rd objective was met.
In short he had a great night and really enjoyed the experience. To qualify for the top 6 shootout in 2nd equal place with Ryan and only 1 point off first was a bonus. He did not look out of place and, aside from young Ryan O'Connor, he was more than competitive with the rest. Given more seat time and free of the confines of a conservative approach I think it is fair to say he could compete competitively within the class. Given future opportunities I am sure he will be more than willing to give it another go.

Jamo, It was a pleasure to work with Foxy and we too were impressed with his first run in a sprint car. His smooth style behind the wheel proved he could easily make the transition to sprint cars. It is always a tough deal to jump into a car that someone else owns and go well but Foxy was up to it. A great guy to work with too!

Its great to hear these positive comments about foxy in a sprinter - hope we see him and the team out there in one on occasion next season, as I beleive more seat time would certainly have him pushing hard for those top placings.
Would still be interested to hear if there was much difference in the way of costs between the two top cars - the spinter and 1nz modified.
good on all those involved for making it happen - always good to see guest drivers.

If you get an engine done locally you would be looking at near enough the same costs for both classes. I am not comparing sprintcars to all mods, only to ours. There are a number of cheaper mods around but the same could be said for sprintcars as well. Where sprintcars are more expensive is in the running costs to keep them at the pointy end of the field.
