The way the numbers stack up almost everyone should be better off. For a wage and salary earner to pay more tax they would have to spend substantially more than they earn. But I guess there are a few around that are actually that unwise.

of course you should be better off with a tax cut on wages, but after 2.5% gets added on to the things that you buy ie fuel, food, power, etc etc we will be spending more money on the things we currently buy, so in the end, no we are not better off.

The way the numbers stack up almost everyone should be better off,,, logic should tell you, that is as likely as pyramid schemes actually working. anyone earning under $40,000 a year will probably be worse off when things filter through( 7c a litre petrol increase, that has yet to be factored in, an increase in freight charges, expect food prices to go up before christmas).

Good to see the glass is still half empty there Woodart. ;D
Petrol didn't go up 7 cents because of GST increase, In reality nothing should go up 2.5% because of the GST increase.
I can't see how, unless (as knownotmuch says) ppl are spending far more than they earn, that anyone will be worse off as a simple result of GST increase and PAYE decrease. Price rises are another matter altogether.

GST going from 12.5% to 15% sounds like a 2.5% increase, but its actually only 2.2222% - do the maths!
Of course some things will go up, but there are plenty of other things that are "price pointed", so $99 items are unlikely to be advertised at $101.20, retailing just doesn't work that way.
And of course $2 shops won't become $2.04 shops...
So yes, most people should be better off - unless you disproportionately increase your spending.

I used to do 600k a week to commute(though I was using a n14 pulsar and a curren....) I transfered closer to home(now doing about 100k per week in a 09 suzuki swift, or my v6 mr2..)so the fuel price is less of a problem now ;D
