Just trying to ascertain whether as a spectator you would most prefer the American Style Format of time trials, A main,B main etc or option 2, Cumulative points 3 heats, or the format that was used at Huntly for the NZ Champs, that is 3 Heats cumulative points setting the grid for a 1 race Final. I personally used to favour the option 2 but the problem was the Winner often was not known at the end of heat 3 due to various factors. And could be an hour or more wait to find out. Not satisfactory for those with children or travelling long distance home after event. So with option 3 you get to see 4 races including all the top cars and know the result when the flag drops at end of final race. Option 1 you get 1 race with the top cars.

Interesting to see the American style format lagging well behind the other two options.

Not that surprising - as it SUCKS!!!
I've watched two NZ titles at Baypark using this system, one for the Super Saloons and one for the Saloons, both were very average meetings to watch, and both resulted in Steve Williams getting a 1NZ on his door without having to make more than a half dozen passing moves all meeting...
Then last year he went to Huntly and should have done the double in the same year - after 3 heats he was an unbelievable number of points up on the next competitor - because he actually CAN pass anyone anywhere, anytime - when he HAS to start from the back and come to the front!!
Personally I think it should have been called there and then, with a very well deserved 1NZ on the door of both his cars.
Yes, the 4th heat all or nothing decider was exciting, but I feel for a guy who had just probably run the best three heat finals night EVER and came away with nothing.
Three heats is the way its always been done, and I'm not a stick in the mud by any means, but I think it isn't broke and doesn't need fixing!
Its only Baypark who use the stupid American format, no one understands it, its not good to watch - and I think they only do it because:
1) They think If its American it must be better... 2) They have a curfew so want it over in the least time (so with the least excitment)... 3) What anyone else wants counts for nothing there...

Steve Williams benefitted the best part of 10 positions after a massive pileup in the third heat. He was a beneficiary of this due to the luck of drawing a rear grid in this heat. I don't have the exact figures but I don't believe he passed many more cars than Brent Emerson. It might have been 1 or 2 more max, maybe the same, maybe 1 or two less. Indeed this was an excellent example of why we should abandon the three heat format.

The Huntly format both the 4 heat qualifying and the 4 heat (3+ 1) finals was the one that I have been pushing for some time and Huntly showed the benefits for all. QualifyingI believe that every car that made the final deserved it. we had 25 cars that should have made the final with only 20 spots, no one made it that didn't deserve it and everyone had a good shot at making it. FinalsIan broke his diff and Nearly made it out for the final and I think he could possibly have made the front five even starting from the back. There was an incident in one race that allowed the back cars in that heat to jump the several cars caught up in that crash and they did benefit by starting the final race at the front. 1 of the cars caught up in that crash was defending champ Shane McIntyre. Under the old format Shane would have been out and Steve Williams would have been the overall winner and alot of people would have been blaming this on the drivers that caused the crash which would have been negative for all. However for those that were at Huntly everyone was positive and all were interested right up till the end of the last race. Pete Hemi nearly came from 16th on the grid to win it. Steve was winning until he spun out. It was all Shane Mcintyres until Brent drove around him on the final lap. The important part for me is that everyone had the opportunity to drive to the front to win that race and everyone watching saw the qualifying, understood why drivers were in the order they were in and got to watch the race unfold in front of them. The finals heats were to put the cars in order for the final and it did that. When drivers were entering the corners racing side by side it was with a car that was racing for position not points and that's important, often under the old system drivers would get out of the way in the last heat to help other drivers and that's simply not fair. Now you get to race with a driver that has the same to lose as you and that's important. The crowd get to stay involved because their driver is in it right up to the final heat. After the success of Huntly, Napier changed their mind polled the drivers and adopted the new format and hats off to them. It will be great for both the drivers and the spectators and that will be good for the sport! Just my thoughts, Shane
