I remerber watching robert holden at wangas all those years as a kid, he was great around that track and man those ducatis sounded mean to!!! My old man knew him, i dont think they raced together but but they knew each other, can alway remember asking dad if we could go see robert again in the pits!!! Great memories aye! Yeah man, Robert and Croz really were Gods in the view of me and my mates. By 1979 I had my 3rd Honda 90, not the fastest bikes in the world but they just go and go and go. I'd get another one now just for the hell of it, they last forever. Skellerup made good wheelie bars haha hosting imagesDuring the winter of 1980 Robert Holden was unbeatable in the rain on his Yamaha RD 350, so I saved up all my haircut money and got one too. Unfortunately by the look of this photo I got last place in the "Smoke Free Burn Out Contest" that year. I hitch hiked to Sweet waters not long after this photo was taken. image host

While I've got the family album out, thought I might as well show you these too.. This is a slighty unusual 1974 MT 175 Honda, might've been a 125, I had when I was about 15, it was what's known politley as "an under-performer." image uploaderThis is my cousin Roger Higgison at Manfeild with his bike. I think is was a RM 250. It was more suited to Wanganui but it was fast. About 1979. Looking back I like the Gulf colours. It had "Humes" written on the tank, my Uncle Noel was the manager at the Humes plant at Upper Hutt where they made tanks, concrete ones. Roger also raced a stock standard Honda CB 500 four in the 500cc Production class, it had cool chrome quad exhaust's. My Uncle Russell Marsh also raced a CB 500 four at the same time, his had a loud 4 into 1 just like Croz's. ;D hosting imagesIn 1978 sometime's we had enough bikes to have race's, other times we had to share. This is; My cousin David Marsh - David was a very successful Modified racer at Palmy the last time Modified's raced here on a regular basis. I think he was even " the man." I'd love to see some photo's of David in his car if anyone has any. Then there's me, my brother Greg, our mate Paul Sowerby who went and played professional Rugby League in France at a young age, motor bike mad 2nd cousin Barry Higgison, Qinten McKay - my mate who's Dad owned a 265 Valiant that we'd borrow haha, and my youngest brother Mat who played professional rugby in Holland. post image wordpressYeah we lived at Manfeild, or down the river where the stone crusher was. Lee's CB900 image uploaderThis is my 21 year old son Zac on his Kawasaki KX250 at a motorcross park on the Gold Coast a month ago free image hostingMy Mum's cousin is Napier's oldest living Bodgie, he used to race solo bikes at Palmy in his late teens when it first opened , and, she said, he raced "back in the Ivan Mauger day's". It would be fantastic if someone had any pictures, his name is Brian Finch. PS: I know what you're thinking about that first photo, so I'll tell you. The grey cat's name was "puss", the white cats name was also "puss" - that way when you wanted them both to come for dinner all you had to say was "here puss, puss."

I look forward to meeting you this season in the pits somewhere mate, did you ever hear of a guy called Jason McEwan ? he went out with a neat lady called Jo who is still a good friend of my ex-wife. I'm sure Jo will have some picture's of John's bike that nobody has seen before. I'll give her a call and see what happens - I'm pretty sure she'll pleased to hear from me. Yip i know of jason, he knew how to ride to, i remember him riding in afew tt as me afew years back, hes as fast on dirt as he is on the road!!!! Yip will find you somewhere at plamy this season mate! I haven't got in touch with Jo yet, but here's a pic I found of Jason on John's bike at Pukekohe. Wonderful thing this internet, I've looked back at a lot of races I was at. I know people will think I'm drifting off topic and "what's all this got to do with speedway? ..but be patient, you'll see.. Jason McEwen aboard the Britten V1000 at Pukekohe. Jason in the first Britten video "First time a New Zealand made bike has won a New Zealand Chamionship - unreal!" image uploadingOur mate Robert Holden (Rest In Peace) adult image hostingThis is the signed poster I had on my bedroom wall for many years - it's still hanging on my wall in my shed at my other house. image hostingRobert on Dallas Rankine's Ducati at Pukekohe free image hostingGraeme Crosby and Tony Hatton before the start of the Amaroo Castrol 6 Hour race in Australia with their 6 cylinder CBX 1000 Honda in 1978. Something went wrong with the bike, or the petrol, and it didn't finish the race. The event was won by Jim Budd & Roger Heyes on a Yamaha XS1100. Number 28 is the Yamaha XS1100 riden by Greg Pretty & Jeff Millar. adult image hostingCroz is probably most famous for his exploits on this bike, the Yoshimura Kawasaki ZIR1000 wordpress image hostingYeah neat thing the internet, according to H&H Auction House, Bruxton, England, Croz's ZIR is still available to the discerning buyer. But it's more than 50,000 pounds. gif uploadHere's a tip; if, like me, you wouldn't mind having a shed full of toys just to have a shed full of toys, don't smoke cigarettes and you'll have plenty of money to have a shed full of toys. This 1974 Yamaha TZ750A is also available through H&H Auctions Bruxton. I saw one at Manfeild once, mean. Not sure if it was Aussie speed king of the time Greg Hansen who rode it or not. upload pngpng

Yeah mate, your post has rekindled a lot of good memories for my family too - my stepfather Joe Goodyer was a very successful harness racehorse breeder and trainer based in Taupiri, near Huntly for many years.. Joe won the John Brandon New Zealand Derby twice as well as the Auckland Derby, one of his best horse's was called "Race Ruler" {Noodlum-Black Velvet}. Anyway, Joe remembers a local guy, also a "Race Ruler" named Ginger, who owned a motorbike shop in Huntly and who would fine-tune his race bikes by blasting around Huntly township.
I found out a bit more about this Ginger guy who went on to become the King of the Wanganui Cemetery Cicuit.
"Some of his victories had a touch of the exotic. In 1968 he won the double on a Spanish 350cc Bultaco, in 1971 he won on a 500cc Kawasaki and in 1974 he rode a 350cc Harley Davidson to a debut win in a feature race. His contribution to the enjoyment of thousands of Cemetery Circuit race fans has been considerable. Ginger Molloy circuit Record: 14 wins, 10 seconds, 5 thirds"

Ginger molloy!!! Hes still racing isnt he, i know he had a bad crash at wanges afew back back but im sure he is still racing. My old man will know. I mite have to go through my old mans photo collection, hes got heaps of everyone but himself, bit hard to take pics when your riding!! He racing nortons he gave up when my sister was born in 79, but starting again 6 or 7 years ago, i try and go with him as much as i can to help. Its fun to watch all these old farts blast around the track, and i tell some of them fly!!

Yeah man! it'd be great if you could put some pictures up, no use just leaving them in the bottom drawer where nobody will ever get to see them aye? ;D A few friends of mine have had Norton Commando's over the years (Gangs RIP, JC and I think Slippery RIP had one too), I like them, they're always black, and those big Manx singles too. PS: It isn't until you want them that you can't find them, and then it's the one's that you really want that you can't find.. I'll keep looking for some pics of some other bike's I've owned that you'll probably find interesting, including my fastest dirt bike - the very last twin shock model red engine Honda CR250, and others. I thought I'd saved a pic of our mate from Levin Jak Jak Ireland's terrifying 2,000cc car engined bike, but I might have to go back down and take another one. I've always wanted one of these, Jak Jak's own's this one, and I think he said his mate has got six! image upload

Yeah sure is mean mate, I'll ask my mate from the good ol days when I see him in the pits next what his bike was. His name is David Donovan, & he was part of the stone crusher crew back in the day, he still rides hard out. David had heaps of bikes, but when everyone else bought XR500's he stuck with big bore motorcross bikes, YZ360, IT400. Digital camera's are such a blessing compared to the trouble and expense of film days. David had a stockcar for a while too. And a 1937 Chevrolet beach buggy that he drove like Evil Kinevil. And he won the NZ Golden Gloves Title while we were in the 5th form.

I like the spirit behind crews that get out there and give it their all on limited finance. Dirt Brothers Racing really impressed me at the NZ Saloon Champs meeting last season when they led and held off Todd Moffat in the non-qualifyiers final for all but the last lap. I awarded them "best wheelstand of the year" (Saloon Cars) wordpress image hosting

What Russian sidecar racers do in the off-season while they're sharpening their spikes and waiting for the track to freeze over.
It seems "Balls of Steel" ain't just held in Wanganui.
And here's one I think Craige sent me of his mates in West Auckland filling in time till the next Smash Fest.
Mean truck's those Crown's, by the look of this one, METAL BOY better get with the program. ;D
"YEAH BABY!"

now THAT would be an awesome between race show!Sorry, meant to hit "reply" not "modify", but anyways.. Puk encouraged a cool race truck burn-out comp at the final night at Palmy one year, which got me thinking... I've got a few friends with some awesome machinery, some of which hasn't been seen for years and years. I'm going to put together a little event this summer in conjunction with a local tire Company, just for the hell of it, and see what happens.

Should make it an event us macgorians can enter... I'd bring my 20year old, completely stock, 4L falcon and see if I can pop the tyres! Or I'd just come and watch...

That's fantastic what you've achieved so far Scotty, best wishes for the finish. Blondie Chamberlin, John Lovelady, Henry Ford - that's some car you've got coming together. I have a dream... I got sent these photo's recently, I don't know much about them or the "Green Team". The motor may be the one in the car in the video, or it might be Chris Allen's Dad's car. I've never met Chris, but I'd like to. Look's pretty cool. The Rattla video is posted elsewhere, but I thought I'd Centralize.. upload pngpng adult image hostingCraig Hyland's Engine Dynamics certainly knows how to build some very grunty motors.
