Hi Scott, I see from the www.pnspeedway.co.nz the new car has debuted - with a fastest lap in heat 3 be really interested in hearing how it went, how you thought it would go, and what the differences between old and new car were. and if anyone has any pics of the new car would be great to see them - think this new beast flew under the radar! And is this the first toyota v8 built out of the Head shop and Bryan Hartley? Going by the laps times It might just be a cool combo

Hi All
I'll put some more pictures of the car up today or in a couple of days for everyone to have a gez at.
Well we got the car last Monday and was a mad rush to complete finishing touches before the first round of the placemakers in Palmy.
Things were coming along until loading the bus when I tripped over the winch cable and shorted out the winch - setting all the diff oil on the floor in the back of the bus on fire as well as the winch cord. With the cord burning into two pieces we managed a quick fix so I'd have to nearly drive into the bus to hook the rope on.
After loading up we got to Palmy just after 5 and went to pick up my freshly painted wing from Jake at Harts. Then around to the track where there was a mad dash to try my hand at sign writting, sticking a number on to get through scrutineering and signing in etc.
Practice: Having never taken the car out on the track for a test drive practice was interesting. The horsepower and torque of the car was a bit of a shock to the system when compared to the old one.
I struggled around at my own pace trying to get used to the handling and steering (10x times more positive than the old car).
Heat 1: For the first heat I was thrown into the deep end a bit and the race was uneventful as I fought with the car the entire race getting used to how everything worked.
Heat 2: When I got onto the dummy grid my pit crew noticed oil leaking out the diff - they tightened all the bolts on the bell and unsure of how much oil we'd lost (but knowing there was still a fair bit in there) I was instructed to go out and do 4 or 5 laps so I could get some more seat time then to pull off so i didn't do any damage to the bearings etc.
This worked out well as my grid draw was from the back - i let everyone go before taking off and sat at the back coming to terms with the car and finally adjsuting to the steering - Pulled off after the requried laps (aparently I've forgotten how to count) and then bought it back in the pits.
We found a bolt that had worked out of the diff (I must've missed tightening this one when I checked them during the week) and got it all sorted and ready to go for the last heat off grid 4.
Heat Three: With images of last season when I started off a similar grid and had tried ducking onto the pole line only to find myself on my roof in the first corner I decided to hold my outside line fo rthe first lap.
This seemed to work until Jack Miers half spun me, only for Shane Mellsop to straighten me up on the way through. I ended up coming out behind Peter Bengston and decided to pace myself off him to learn the limits of the car.
I followed him past Phil Ogle and past Jack Miers with the car really starting to get wound up. The car had a small push in the the entrance to the corners but we put it down to learning to drive the car rather than the set up.
About 7 or 8 laps in I misjudged a pot hole in the entrance to the pit corner and hit it full speed - the car jumping in the air and coming down on the back right - with it coming up and cutting through the body - Blowing the tyre in an instant.
I pulled off and the night was over. I must have been going well in the last heat as I recorded the fastest lap time and it really is a credit to Mr Rees for the car set up and Mr Hartly for the awesome new Toyota (yes it is the first Hartly Toyota).
I also need to Apoligise to Jake at Harts Body SHop and Blair at Display Associates - They did an awesome job with the paint and the graphics but I've already cracked the body. The right hand side has split now from when teh right rear hit it so its already looking second hand - Sorry guys. I guess thats racing.
As for the old car it has been added to our collection in the old shed - now taking pride of place behind the old mans tank. Only thing missing is the raptor gear box which has gone to the new car and the race tech seat which is also in the new one.
All in all I am over the moon with the car - it is a big step up from what I used to drive and I have a good feeling about this season.
Next meeting is this Saturday in Palmy again - need as much seat time as I can get.
Cheers Scotty Duncan Superstock 23v

Awesome update Scotty, and looking foward to any pics you might have.
Had to LOL at the escapades with the winch and oil fire etc - we've all been there in the rush to the track - well, except for the oil fire hahaha.
Some footage from another thread which will hopefully feature some of the new car doing it

Good luck for the season, the car looks good from the photos so far. No doubt Pete will get you on the brake going into the turns to sort that push out!
