Highlights:
1. 12 teams entered - awesome commitment from all teams and clubs! 2. Wgtn vs ESS race - what a ripper 3. Rotorua Rascals back into the fold 4. Speedbox - couldn't get there but enjoyed the live viewing! 5. It was good the Pumas taking the meeting back to Palmerston North from Wellington eg good crowd, facilities, speedbox support, organisational sound, fantastic support races - Superstocks etc. No disrespect Wellington but it feels better away from you! 6. Pumas well done - hard team to beat with dem three fast mean tanks!
Constructives:
1. Pumas and Wellington only two teams to have won the competition in last how many years? Other than those two teams realistically what is the likelihood of any other team taking the meeting back to their home track? 2. Commentating - it would have been good to hear some more rounded comments eg two HB cars gridded up backwards vs Rascals and no comments? I thought that was a funny moment. Perhaps I'm splitting hairs but with all due respect I got tired of hearing the comments "this has to have been the greatest teams race of all time" re Wgtn vs ESS. Yes it was very good and the underdog ESS won after being down to three cars but ESS DIDN'T MAKE THE FINAL! How can you compare that race to some of the great superstock races? "The pendulum swings....." say no more. ;D

Pumas and Wellington only two teams to have won the competition in last how many years? Other than those two teams realistically what is the likelihood of any other team taking the meeting back to their home track? i agree, while its great that i can attend the meeting with it being held here in palmy, it would be great for some other tracks to get a share of the pie, and as a result, a share of the gate revenue. 2. Maybe the commentator was unwell. I could not believe the amount of silly mistakes that were made last night. The mixing of names on numerous occasions. The Rico and Gaskin ones stood out, also on the red light stoppage he took ages to notice the car that rolled in turn 2. I am not having a go at anyone but there was something wrong and I wonder what it was.

Unfortunately it must be a long term illness!!!!Age I think it's called, again no disrespect to the man as he has been OK but really his calling is getting worse..time PN bit the bullet and recruited a new caller and infield assistant as Mr P struggles to get around there these days...I am a local so think I can accurately make this assessment as I see and hear it every week..

Hi,
Slight correction, the commerntator is Russell Harris not Russell Harrop (I was having too much fun watching the racing). The commentator also has way more of the grey stuff on the top of his head than me! I do agree though, maybe it's time to blood in a younger commentator/infeild pair for the future. I can remember when Ray Tarrant did it so we've been spoilt for choice over the years.
Overall a great meeting, plenty of action in all the "bumper" classes. Well done to the Puma's and Peter B for the Gold Cup
Cheers Russell Harrop (the ex-racer, not the commentator)

If you check out www.squarephotography.co.nz/gallery.asp?ID=37 , Brendon got a photo of them and you'll see them parked there, though I'm still baffled as to why in the first place. ;D ;D

I also live in Palmy and moan every week about our commentator. He is very poor and makes mistakes all night. But the thing that annoys me the most is that he only knows about three or four peoples name in the race. It appears he does not go to the pits and find out who people are even local P contracted drivers.
I am sick of hearing about rees and family, Hemi, and in the mini stocks only knows a few.
We need an up to date young very interested person.
There must be better people out there that have more knowledge of who people are and accurate facts.

They also need to do something about the sound system. They seem to have lost a few speakers since last year, there's a big gap along the start finish straight and even when between races it is almost impossible to hear anything being said

I would like more lights on.... Palmy never used to have dark spots on the track but now its hard to make out the cars when looking at one end from the other end.

I only got to Friday night's meeting, but it would have been hard to improve on. The only negative as others have noted is the commentary; Russell Harris wasn't young when he was commentating back in the mid-to-late 1970's. And yes; there is a dead patch for sound on the start-finish straight, so on Friday night, I probably didn't hear the worst of the commentary.
On a positive note, the meeting flowed well on Friday, and even Wiseowl wasn't too upset by the near-11pm finish, such was the on-track action. The hot-laps starting on both sides of the track are a time-saver (which Bruce Robertson had to do with the late start to the SS Teams Champs on Friday last year) and that's good, but he should go a step further and do ALL the coin tosses off-track prior to the meeting so that teams can just do their laps then grid up.
But Palmy is without the best stockcar facility in the country (sorry Rotorua; you're a close second!), and the staff there have the experience to run a well-organised meeting. If anyone complained about bang for their 25 bucks on Friday night, I'd venture to suggest that they would be nigh-on impossible to please.
Well done to the Pumas, and well done to the Wanganui Vulcans who gave it their best shot. And well done to all the guys who put their cars and bodies on the line this weekend; that was one helluva show!

As long as we went backwards we couldnt see a problem as it was race direction. It was only for 5th & 6th and was a nothing teams race so we thought we would have a laugh and do it, something different and as Marty Jones said to me "spose there's always a first" when i backed up on the start line. Hey we there to entertain the crowd. As for the format i dont think it is good as the old, if you get in the top 4 you should stay in the top 4.

Yeah Regan, the crowd got some thrills at the end of the race from the Maulers too.. Bit risky though being too eager to grab the flag while the race is still on - (a) your Manager could've got killed and then who would've paid for the beers? and (b) if I was on the opposition team I'd have protested for you's having an extra member on the track during the race, and that could've been costly. Of course there's a few pics in this series, but they're too scary. hosting imagesAlso, at the end of the race on the finals night I thought it was great how you guys invited Damian Orr to join your victory lap. jpeg image hosting

Spot on on both counts Regan, a bit of light relief on a dismal weather night was a good thing pity the commentator didn't play it up though. Dead right with the format too.

I thought it was an excellent meeting , but the big question I have is why does the infeild announcer ignore the grandstand. ???this goes on meeting after meeting and is very unprofessional. the infeild advertising hoardings face the grandstand so I guess someone is on the ball , but to have all the intros and prizegivings with your back to a packed granstand is something that puzzles and disappoints.
