I want to say thankyou to Elmo & Paula for there part in this trial project, putting it on the line & having a bit of a blast along the way. Some very useful information gained that without you're input, we would not have had the confidence in what we are doing to be rite for the class, & for this trial to continue. With the car now sold, I guess its unlikely we will see too much of Elmo on track. I'm sure you guys will watch with interest in the months/years to come, & know you played a vital part in what will ultimately be the fostering of what many concider to be the premier speedway class in NZ. Good luck to the new owner of the 511 car, very good car. Thanks Elmo & Paula, Brendan Lucas.

Can anyone update us on the number of 350 cars out there now, and if possible how they are going?
I'll have a stab in the dark and guess there might be three that have made it too the track?

Have tried a Holley and Demon (650 DP's), have tried different jets. Have swapped the dissy and leads to the HEI from my corvette (which was running sweet)and changed plugs. It starts fine and idles perfect until oil reaches 55 and starts going rough, once at 60 starts blowing out fuel, missing etc. Seems like a lifter problem. Have been on the phone to the states waiting to hear back. -Oh and a big thanks to Brendan for all his help so far too

Sounds like a cam lobe gone.
Could be a Monday morning engine when they ran it up at factory and there wasn't enough lubrication on the lobe.

How has the season gone for those guys running these motors? I think there were a few more out and about this year, with some bad luck with a dud cam lobe in the Marx motorsport team meaning they were delayed being the only news i heard?
I think the 29b Demanser car had a full season with the 350 - how did it go?
Also, who else was running one this season?

We have had a couple of proper nights running with the new engine and it going really well. For the first night I replaced the rear suspension but ran out of time to do the front so was a bit of a handful, got better throughout the night. Very different to drive. The lap scoring wasn't consistent, due to the way we had to re-mount the transponder so the new exhausts wouldn't melt it.
By the second full night I'd replaced the front suspension as well which made the car easier to setup. Bryce drove it for that night and it went really well, with a 4th, 3rd, and 2nd. But only about 8 or 9 cars on the track and by the end of the night track was getting pretty rough, so wasn't a great indication of how the cars were really matched.
Its only going to get better. Hopefully a final run this weekend weather permitting at WP.

I was going to wait on some folk in the USA to get back to me regarding their opinion of the failed component in the Marx’s first engine, which caused the Marx’s all that trouble early on, before any further updates, but Mr Smith has forced my hand. The Marx engine suffered a broken lifter, which only under full load it would reveal itself - very tricky to find. At this point, the manufacturer has the damaged lifter & is dealing with a metallurgist to determine cause of failure. I will publish their findings as they become available. They have commented this is the first time in many thousands of engines sold, they have come across this. My comment back was I have experienced this in 1 of 8 engines (not all superstock) so far. Watch this space. As far as the trial goes, a pretty quite year with only 4 of the 6 cars in the trial making the track, & with only 2 of them getting full seasons. Likely 7 cars will be in the trial for next season, with 2 of the seven wanting to put a second car in, so steadily growing. As previously mentioned, the trial has been extended by 2 years, so pretty much from the start of the coming season there will be 2 years of this trial to run for a fairly insignificant investment. I’m not going to comment on individual opinions of those involved in the trial, I want to leave that for them completely impartial & transparent so there is nothing to hide. I will say though, if there is anybody out there that can give Brent Crookes a job here in NZ away from the WA mines, then please do so, I believe he will become an asset to the class. Some pros & cons so far Pros - The cost of owning & running a superstock will be significantly reduced. - For a perspective competitor wanting to enter the superstock class, where previously being put off by the cost of owning & running the current competitive engines, a genuine option now exists, albeit as a trial at this point. - Apart from the above mentioned lifter failure, they have proved to be reliable & reasonably competitive. Cons - You can’t run them at any SNZ sanctioned championship race meetings during the trial period. - They do have a different power profile from the current 248 engines so that does mean adjusting the car to suit. They seem to be very competitive on the slicker surfaces where lower hp suits, but the cars do seem to need ‘different from conventional’ setups to cope with the heavier tracks. Just another comment, this trial is base on my own opinion of what will be the best for the superstock class in order for it to grow. That being cost, reliability, availability, & being reasonably competitive without blowing the doors of the top cars but being capable of running closer to the front of the pack & picking off the odd win if the driver & car is capable of doing so. It's almost impossible to please everyone, so I won't bother trying to. If someone wants to start there own trial with there own set of wants then they are free to do so, just contact SNZ and put you're case to them, simple really. I have heard it said, why would you fit an engine if you are unlikely to win? My answer to that is why would you only spend $40k on an engine when you can have a better one for $70k (the GM602 by the way is ~ the $8k). Simple, you aren’t going to attract the best drivers necessarily, but those that can afford it. Thankyou, BL

Didn't get enough meetings with mine this season , came home at the wrong time with NZs and 240s being on in January so no local meetings to run at. Ran off the back of the stocks at WP couple of times and a day at patetonga. Had a few dramas as you do with a new car but pleased to say that the engine performed faultlessly. Engine dyno'd up within 4hp of the factory specs and after a half day trying all sorts of changes couldn't find any mass hp gains which I was glad to find. Engine is well sealed, can only only remove the rocker covers, every bolt is a tamper proof factory item, even the sump which I also liked. Was real impressed with the power it made, 340hp with 418 ft of torque.. ( same sort of torque as a big dollar quad cam for well under 1/4 the price). Overall really impressed with the engine package we were supplied with and can't wait to get back out next season and clock some more miles up on it. Will be back in late Nov (currently chasing the dirt $$ in western oz) but will have another driver or 2 in the hot seat for the first few meetings before hand. Roll on 2013/14 season. As a side note, a massive massive thanks to Brendon Lucas and SNZ for the work they have put into this trial. I can honestly say that without this trial engine I wouldn't be able to run a (what I hope to be) competitive car for the $$ I'm willing to spend and would have probably chosen a open wheel class even tho it's always been a dream to run a contact class.

First outing for our trail engine tri rail last night and pretty happy with debut. Starting and finishing all 3 races and doing its best lap time on the last lap of last race, after changing gear sets and set up all night. Looking forward to next meeting now we have a starting point. Leech Motorsport

Awesome to hear the first trial motor has made it out in the South Island. Having spoken to a number of people associated with superstocks in the South Island there is some real interest in seeing what these perform like. There is some suspicion that a number of other cars and drivers out there would be really interested in making a step up to superstocks with this cheap alternative of an engine.
What I think will be really interesting is seeing the true potential of this motor - this is a top chassis with the good gear in it, with an experienced driver who has shown consistancy in the past. The team have experiance in a number of different grades, so hopefully, if anyone can get it close/on to the pace I am sure these guys can.
Has to be a step foward for CHCH superstocks surely.
How are the other 350 cars going around the country? I lose count these days?
Especially when you see the tri rail next to this car that is still running the stockcar spec engine, and with HOosiers is right on the pace in the superstock class.

cAN anyone confirm if the 24c car raced as 9c at the Battle of the stocks in the weekend? If so the lap times look impressive - pretty close to the pace, and some good results prior to the bad luck with the roll over. Be good to hear from any eye witnesses on how they thought this trial motor went in a feild of big guns. photos from the woodford glen facebook page www.facebook.com/WoodfordGlenHopefully we can hear some feedback from the team on how they are finding the motor - looked real strong off turn 4 in the footage of racing I did see. Hopefully with the King of the Coast coming up we might see a couple of trial motors at this event selling the concept.
