Question is though what the heck is it to me looks like a wedge on wheels not like a car. You can't tell if its a chev or ford, about time they reinstalled the rule that the cars actually have to resemble an actual car

As i crewed on a 1nz super for a few years i think i have the right to comment about what they look like hell talk to some of the drivers they don't like it either snz let the rules slip until it was too late so they let them change to what they are to make the cars legal again . Again i ask what the heck is the car (I have a fair idea as i know craig and TC even crewed for TC ) but to the general public they wouldnt have a clue

[/glow] That they are getting away with wedges is insane - they look nothing like a corvette until you see the arse end and even then its only kind-of similar... The panels are too square the only real resemblence is a few circular holes cut into the back for the "lights" the back of them have. where's the curves? wheres the low bonnet profile? wheres the bulges over the wheel arches? Those arent corvettes - theyre latemodels. and as such are not road cars and are not technically eligible.

Thats rubbish they called for submissions and most were happy with the change. Its about racing and going fast isnt it? So question ... if they arent with in the rules how come they are permitted to race and race at SNZ meets and pass SNZ scrutineering. Obviously theres a lot of people that like where this class is going with these bodies because its happening isnt it. I just pointed out that the rule still exits - and that they dont SEEM to be following it. If they are getting dispensation to run the wedge bodies then thats fine.

The rule I posted is out of the latest one!! Besides, you can go fast without having to use a wedge shaped car, look at Brent Emersons from last season - thats a pontiac, and looks like one. look at the cars that used to be raced - all had curves in the right place and where fast... what actually makes them go fast? the drive train - the body is just a small factor.

[/glow] Those arent corvettes - theyre latemodels. and as such are not road cars and are not technically eligible. Firstly they're not "Late Models" Late Model's have their engine set back, I believe they have bigger engines, allow wheels, walking diffs etc. As we have a lot of keyboard racers here (including myself at times) I thought I'd call Shane from Hypermac and ask him a few questions in respect to this post. We all seem to no the answers but we back it up with opinion rather then fact. Shane McIntyre has spent a great deal of time building his Hypermac Chassis with a large amount of consultation with Speedway NZ to ensure he was doing things within the rules. In the Rule quoted above the last line reads. Except where permitted in the following rules: Firstly there is a 50mm tolerence given when building cars on heights, lengths, wheel bases, bodies etc. That 50mm tolerence can completely change the look of a car "Within the rules" Plastice bonnet's are allowed within the rules. If you're running a plastic bonnet you may extend the front over hang by 200mm to accomodate the Plastic front. Corvette Roofs can be widened by up to 100mm (due to safety.) You can run flat sides on a Super Saloon again within the rules. This is how these cars are able to look the way they do (Within the rules) It's not the driver/owner or builders fault that they are allowed "With in the rules" to run different body styles. Numbers in the class have increased since this style of car has been introduced. The more the better I say, Let me know if you have any questions you want asked because between myself and The Pits Speedway i'm sure we can get the answer you want. StM

Ive been thinking "they cant be legal" for a while now - glad to see they actually are... Didnt realize the latemodels were allowed engine setback, thought our rules were more similar to theres. Overall Im not a fan of the shape - I might get used to it eventually but Im too stubborn to change my mind quickly.

StM Ok - the rules apparently explain that latemodel style bodies are illegal - and they dont at the same time.. back when this debate started I thought "why not just go ask the guys in charge?" and did - I emailed Laurie Callender and here is his reply - directly copied and pasted from my email. I would have posted this sooner but I only got it today. Hi Kane,Sorry for late reply but have been away overseas for past week. The body rule contradicts itself when it talks about retaining original shape and then gives a whole lot of exemptions for certain panels. The rule is currently under review with the Technical committee because of this. In the meantime the scrutineer/Steward will determine if the body work meets the current rule wording. There is nothing in the rules that allow late model bodies. Regards Laurie Callender Operations Manager Speedway NZ
So there we have it - they arent legal, but theres enough confusion created by the wording to make them legal enough for now and the tech committee is working on the rulebook to make it clear wether they are or not...

nothing beats the look of the old skinny super however the look is growing on me and the class has definatly grown in numbers and that is great weather this is due to the quality of the hypermac as a package or what i dont think its getting out of control yet but will be great once the rules are more defined so long as no major changes are made that will only end up making the guys that has spent all the money within the current rules very angry.
