had some ideas in my head so i ocked up a siderail out of wood. told the mrs i was making something for the kids...hahaha.. a couple of minor changes, and cut some steel, tacked up one side.. mocked it up for a laugh.. Tim sent me a firewall, so i trimmed it to suit, still wanna slice 25mm off the left side and maybe 10mm off the right side.. wanted to run a bar up the side of the firewall but didnt want to sacrifice the last of the leg room for pedals etc, so i channeled some 50x25x4 to slot over the firewall..not sure if itll be used yet.. falcon 3 speed box..might end up using a QM throw out bearing cos of the fork angle and length, not alot of option there and dont know about using a cable. front end using hiace hubs and has rod ends on everything. next week ill update with the diff..ill let the cat out of the bag on what ill be using and why...hoping itll work.

all 75x50x4 so far. the last of that will go in for the rear 4 link up rights.
then the rest will be 50x50x3 for the cross bracing and 40x40 for the siderails and outriggers.

once my diff arrives on monday ill sit it in the chassis to make sure its gonna work as an offset..
then ill weld the firewall in properly, then bolt up the motor and make the mounts.
then i will be stuck untill i can get my hands on a carb adaptor. if youve got one let me know. im using a ea manifold untill i get the EL xr6 manifold modded.
once thats done ill finish welding in the front 4 link up rights, rear up rights and diff mounts.
then i can pull it all apart, completely weld up whats there so far. bolt in the diff and front end, get my hands on some shocks and coilover tubes and springs, set them up, then ill pull it all apart again and put in all the cross braces and floor/hip plates, pedal bos mounts etc.
then paint all that, and wait for a seat to mount so i can make the cage(ill be getting someone else whos done a cage to build it for me).
then its just the fiddly bits from there..

picked up some hubs the other day, but one is missing a disc and caliper and a few studs..doh but the hubs are on ready for some rims... the ones i have here have a smaller centre hole so dont bolt on the diff is finished, allthough i found that ill need to move the inner arm mount.. i have decided to sell all my tractor links and just run rod ends all round now.. i can use the front arms to mock up the diff anyway, but im so happy with the diff, an offset diff, 9.5" for $120...and all factory parts, no cutting axles etc.. boomer. ill be running a single drum on the left rear, the brake shoes are about 2" wide so should brake good and very little to go wrong. only problem is the diff flange is different to the hilux pattern, ill just make an adaptor plate for it..no biggy.. pics to follow later

ok, so the low down on this diff: its a bj45 rear diff, 4.1:1 open diff. these are 9.5" diff with massive axles. same width as the hilux diff i have sitting on the floor. although a bit heavier. so as standard the diff head is sitting on the right hand side. however the rear cover unbolts and is the same pattern as the diff head, so all i did swap take it apart, flip the housing round, cut some notches in the housing for the crownwheel to rotate through like the other side, reassemble.. too darn easy and it works.. once it was set in to make sure itll work I got my crew cheif to reassemble the diff..

note that the 2 inner link brackets will be coming off and be moved in about 20mm for the rod ends to be used instead of tractor links. the rod ends do cost twice as much as the tractor links, plus the cost of the pipe and locking nuts.. but look better and are lighter, and probably just as strong anyway..

You will find the rod ends will last 3 times as long as tractoer links and will save you money in the long run. We use tractor links for year and was for ever replacing them and with the rod ends now i havent touch one for the last 4 seasons.

yeah, was my thoughts aswell. tractor links when new already have play in the ball and socket when new. but the rod ends are smooth..
$30 for a tractor link and $30 for each rod end, 2 rod ends per arm, so double the cost..
but yeah, im banking on the replacement factor..

burney-balls aka jono by any chance?? trimmed the left side of the firewall by another 20mm.. i am at a standstall till i can get hold of a carb adaptor and fully weld the firewall in so i can mount the engine in and make the mounts. then mod the top rail to fit the carb in.. then i can do the link mounts for the front axle, and all the cross bracing. what size pipe do people use for the outriggers? im keen to use pipe instead of box section on this one..

front end set up i got this off a local driver up the rd. set up fpr hiace hubs. made my arms for the front and rear with rod ends.. made up my link box uprights. these will be further braced, allthough its 4mm anyway. then i chucked the cross arm like so... and done.... im still looking for info on what this sticker is all about, it was on the back of the tickford motor..

ventured back into the shed today.. cut off the inside diff mounts as i needed to change them for the rod ends instead of craptor links...
welded them back on, chucked the diff in position, put the arms on and then realised i have no steel for the link box uprights (like the front)
these uprights will be welded to the outside of the top and bottom rails and be braced by the 3mm hip plate, aswell as an extra plate welded to the inside of the hip plate for the bolts seat..should be strong enough..
then once those are in ill do the lateral bar and its done...
next is the carb adaptor so i can get the motor mounted and cut the top rail to clear the carb...
and then i can go spastic and do all the cross bracing and finish the welds off, fit the bumpers, siderails and steering box..
im stoked its almost rolling..just need some rims for the front and suspension for it to roll.

got my link box uprights made for the diff today. only need to make the lateral panhardy type bar and shes done.. these are made from 50x25x4...the hip plate will be welded to this aswell so itll give it a fair bit more strength. will be making the hip plates today.. hopefully i remember to allow enough room to fit the diff head through, haha.
