Are you able to run without them?(I know this would be silly in a teams race but just a hypothetical question) Nope. The wheel guard is there to help prevent the rear wheels (the ones getting power from the engine) from becoming missiles themselves. Thanks that has answered my question, I understand re a guard sitting on the track etc

has anyone noted if the wheel gates that are coming away are the type that have the bolt through them from the side or pin through the top?? maybe the pin type is more reliable over a broken or loose bolt? just an idea for next year I remember a few years ago seeing guys actually weld on their wheel gates as well as bolt them when going out for a teams race. I guess this is another way to ensure it stays on. Some drivers have perfected the art - and it is an art - of hitting a car on just the right angle and snapping the pin type connections on some wheel gates. the bolt in type are safer as they have no exposed portions that can be broken - however they can still be bent out of shape if the wheel gate gets hit hard enough, and sometimes can be snapped by continuous hits or massive hits in just the right place. Welding the guard on as well makes it part of the side rail, saves the loss of wheel gate through broken pins or bolts and also adds the strength of the wheel gate to the side rails and rear bumpers.

And the wall riding rule... imo needs to be relaxed... gone the days where you see kerry remnant wall riding with 3 wheels and still causing havoc!! just love the smell of the concrete dust and sparks flying everywhere.
