Thanks for the update Barry. That was a truly nasty crash on Saturday night. I took my daughter into the pits before the meeting and showed her Shane's car and the amazing engineering that goes into it. It was really sad to then see him hurt like that. It just goes to highlight the fact that when our heroes do up those belts they really do put their lives on the line for us fans in the stand. Please pass on our regards to one of the good guys of our sport.

It is great to hear that Shane is stable and starting the long road to recovery. I wish him all the best on that journey and hope that he makes a full recovery.

Point to note.... this thread has 18,000 views, and counting!! Sort of sums up what an incredibly well liked and respected guy Shane is in our sport.

It's hard to think that a nice guy like Shane Penn has come to grief like this. My wife (Kate) & myself are thinking of you and your family Shane and Pray that you will pull through this and be pain free asap.
Racing is for the dirt not the roads

Wow 21,000 Hits Now Shows how much concern there is for Shane. Do we have any more news Barry. Keep hearing bits and bobs but would be good to get something official. He is such a respected racer and good guy. Thoughts are with Penn family and friends.

Just a another quick update from Philippa. Shane is steadily improving, still sleeping a lot but certainly more alert. He is now in a ward and although he has still not been operated on Philippa says things are definitely improving although it's still going to be a slow road to recovery. Once again, Philippa thanks everybody for their amazing support, the texts, the calls, sadly the no visitors sign is still up, but that will obviously change at a future time. Philippa has still not been able to get back to everybody that has made contact, and it still feeling rather overwhelmed by it all. Hopefully another update will be forthcoming with further good news early next week.

Sometimes with a big accident, and it happened to me with a road crash many years ago, they have to wait for other parts of the body to heal themselves before they worry about things such as bones. Things change day by day too, as the human body is quite a miraculous piece of equipment.

Is normal practice unless there is a danger to the patients health.

As of this morning Shane is doing a lot better, and reportedly making huge progress every day. He's still going to be in Auckland for a little while longer yet before heading home to the sunny HB, but instead of sleeping a lot like he was a week or so ago he's now having to be told by staff to go to sleep!! Talking to Philippa it certainly sounds like the fighter is fighting back. More news in a few days.
