At this time of year, yes, at other times no (and there's no option to vote for that). Also, some tracks are not allowed to start racing as early as 6pm.
If the big-tyred classes start too early it gets too dusty.

Starting at 6pm would increase the issue of 'sun strike' at many of the tracks.

Definite no from me
Been going to Speedway for 25+ years, but a 6pm start would be the end of that as I play cricket and wouldn't bother if I was going to miss a lot of the action

No, when I'm working days I finish at 6. Sunstrike is still an issue even at this time of year when Palmy is starting at 6

Friday night meetings in Auckland would be hard because the time people finish work and traffic.
But people with kids yes.

6pm start??? Where did this come from? haha
I am in Christchurch, Speedway (Ruapuna, Woodford Glen) always used to start at 7.30pm. Then it got changed to 7pm at Ruapuna and eventually Woodford Glen start now at 7pm somewhere.
Ruapuna Speedway now have to begin at 6.30pm and try and end events by 10.30 because of noise restrictions...because there is so many people living near there you know...its so loud.
Most of the trees block out the noise anyway, and new ones have been planted to help with that which will grow quickly hopefully. But...seriously..Speedways having noise time limits...I think its pathetic. I mean surely we are all trying to make Speedway the biggest and best sport in the country? And here we have these sorts of problems.
I prefer it starting at 7.30pm to be honest. Sounds insane now for some reason, I guess people or you just get used to the time change.

Nelson trialled 6pm starts last year for Sat night meetings, and still 7pm for Fridays (to allow for ppl working til 5 etc) and it worked a treat. Was a more family friendly start time and people with children could still leave before the end of the meeting, without it being too late. Although it did mean a few quick trips from Blen, not leaving till 4pm. This season though, Im in nelson and only 15 mins from the track. They are doing 6pm starts for almost every meeting this season

6pms way to early. If it was my way 7.30 is the correct time. For Woodford Glen and Ruapuna anyway. Ruapuna can't do that now. I don't know if Kaipoi has problems with Woodford Glen noise, haven't heard about it...most people from Kaipoi possibly go there anyway.
Another reason is saving on power bills with lights, it makes a big difference. Not all tracks can afford, or would benefit from saving on power bills from overhead lights.
The other alternative is all cars use their own lights for every second race. I think turning them off and on again uses up more power though. Just a theory..

At first I'd say yes just because there would be more light to take photo's, but then I'd say no because sun strike is a real hazard for drivers going full noise in front of the grandstand at Palmy, so on balance, I'd say no.

yes to meeting that could run over time. like superstock teams. as the teams increase the start time should be brought back to accomadate that. tracks with a time limit and penalties should look at this for meeting with a full massive program as an answer. 7pm is fine but 6 isnt bad. each have posatives and negatives. hope common since here wins at the end of the day.

Probably more important the green light and flag should drop at start time . Grand parade and wheel packing can all happen before that. Start time means racing starts at start time not negotiable.

Start time means racing starts at start time not negotiable. 2016 SNZ Commentator of the year Nailed it Orapiuwharf. If the start time is 7pm then that is race one out the gate on the dot or darn well close to it. None of this wheel packing or Grand Parade stuff going on. A true fan is there well before kick off but the casuals like the Family who goes once every few meetings just want to see racing so don't mind getting there 10 min before flag drop. I personally do not like when it's 7.10 and the Water truck is still out there and then there is a grand parade!!!!.{ Just a scenario } 20 minutes lost and then the event runs till 11pm. A Family Sport such as Speedway should not run past 10.30 at the latest or else you have paying spectators going home without seeing what they paid their hard earned cash for, A FULL MEETING. 6 classes and 18 races is IMO the correct ratio on a race night. If allowing for 10 min per heat = 3 hours allowing 30 min for hold ups etc. Yes unforeseen problems occur on any given night but they need to be expected and factored into the time frame not unexpected.

Start at 6-6.30 for mini stocks and other appropriate classes. Bit like the shorts before a movie.

An interesting take on this debate:
In the UK we often raced Saturday night, but also a lot of Sunday during the day - Midday start, 5pm ish finish - was very popular too, particularly with families. Now i live over here i realise this would be a tough thing to do as its not "traditional", but for the local residents noise during the day is more acceptable than noise at night. Just a thought.
Perhaps we need to change to survive? After all, daytime works very well for tarseal race circuits...

After Seeing the meeting at Waikaraka that started at an earlier time of 5.30 I would have to say Yes. Lots more families attended and stayed afterwards to go into the pits. On that night the 24a car of Ben Harding won all four races and the impromptue signature signing session afterwards was something I have never seen before. Kids were lining up for autographs and they were being put in the car for photos. I believe this was because of the earlier finish time.
