I have been watching the rallycross on sommett, it is europes fastest growing motorsport, and will no-doubt come back here, they used to have it at manfeild and mystery creek years ago. dont know why it died, it is good value. I think that NZ speedway should be pro-active with this and get ahead of the game, it has more in common with speedway than any other motorsport, and many of our tracks could be turned into fairly good temporary rallycross circuits(take down a section of fence, put in a jump out into the pits, whiz around there, then back out onto speedway track for 3/4 lap of speedway). its not speedway jim, but its the next best thing!!

I would love to do rallycross - would turn my current tow wagon into a rally cross car in a heartbeat. Rwd, straight six grunt and I already use it for autocross and ghymkhana events so I know how to handle the big girl!!
at the last event I entered it in I was the longest, widest, heaviest and most powerful car there - I wasnt quick - got 20 something out of 30 people, but I had huge amounts of fun!

Often thought they could have made an awesome rally stage at Meremere using the dragstrip, Highbanks and dirt-track connecting them all with/via the access roads etc, pity the Highbanks are no-longer as a rallycross track could be created there.

Agreed, tracks like TeMarua & Wanga Vegas would kinda work, in my mind.

so speedway drivers cant do rallycross in thier off seasons? thats a bit harsh isnt it?[/quote] Never said they can't.. Never stopped a few other drivers doing both, but why use a dedicated track which is for speedway for rally cross. Now where is the oval in Lydden Hill. Its better to use a track that is designed for Rallycross rather than for speedway.

there are no tracks in new zealand dedicated for rallycross as the sport has not arrived here {again} yet - if you look at the tracks in england they are not dedicated rally cross tracks either - they are multi class tracks catering for on track and rallycross racing.
I would be surprised to learn of any track that does not cater for another style of racing - it may actually be good for some kiwi tracks to open up to this idea in order to bring in some extra, probably much needed, revenue over the off season periods when our tracks are often simply sitting empty and going to waste.
would be good to see some used year round - many are not used enough during a season let alone outside it.

The rules for rallycross tracks and running the event have been in the Motorsport NZ manual since Adam was a cowboy. The dedicated Rally Cross cars in europe tend to be ex WRC cars with the small rally restrictor removed and fitted with a 45mm restrictor which limits power to around 460-500Hp. It is about as closely related to speedway as racing cars is related to typing on a keyboard, yet there seems to be a number of people who think being an expert in both go hand in hand. A rally cross track is actually about to start being built near Tauranga, but due to the limited money available to build it, it will start off very basic and develop as the years go by.
