Qualifying Format -
For those that haven't read the entry form for this event, here is a brief overview of the qualifying format.
Competitors will be divided into 6 equal groups. The top 4 points scorers in each group over 3 heats, will go forward into the main group to contest the NZ Title. Two repecharges will be held on the second evening, and from each of those, the top 3 cars will be added to the main event.
So, if your maths is any good you will now have the final figure of cars that will contest the NZ Title ...............yep 30.
You won't want to miss this one...!!!!

Wow 6 cars from repercharge that's a bit harsh, so you could have an amazing qualifying night, come home fifth then have a flat in the repercharge and it's all over

I hate having repercharges in contact classes, but I REALLY hate the idea of them when they are not needed. With 30 qualifiers from 6 groups you have nice round numbers. I know the host club can run an event how they choose, and this is Nelson's BBQ, so their call how to cook it, but IMHO, qualifying night is just that, the night to qualify. For mine 6 groups with just over 100 cars is spreading things a bit thin but 30 cars on the Nelson dog track will be way cool for the finals.

Wow 6 cars from repercharge that's a bit harsh, so you could have an amazing qualifying night, come home fifth then have a flat in the repercharge and it's all over There has to be a cut-off somewhere, and the maths around the number of groups your running versus the amount of cars you're running in the finals has a lot to do with determining how many go where. Most Superstock events that have run repechages in recent years have only taken two cars via the last chance race(s), and you reckon 6 is harsh? (or are you suggsting it's harsh because 6 is too many?) I reckon it's too many, as the more you take via the repechage races the less you take from the actual qualifying heats themselves. The system is something that might work FOR any given driver one year and AGAINST him the next. Whenever you take 120-170 cars down to 30, a much larger % are going to miss out than are going to make it. What the Repechage does do is to give a second chance to a real top competitor that gets a flat in one heat on night one to recover that position, fairly or unfairly you could argue.......so it all depends when you get your flat. Although no time is a good time in a field as large as the NZ Stockcar title draws each year. If they'd of run 5 groups of 24 (with 5 qualifying straight through to the finals from each group) instead of 6 groups of 20 in qualifying, they couldn't have staged two Repechages if they still wanted to run a 30 car Final. Maths has a lot to answer for....... Barry B

how many cars did palmy get last year for nzs Last 2 or 3 years I'm sure the numbers were 170+ Has only been over 170 a couple of times, and other than Rotorua (2011/12) the numbers have been shie of that mark in recent years (Stratford still hold the record from 2007/08 I think). Barry B

And if there were 5 groups, of which 6 in each go through and you finish 7th with no repecharge you will be equally disappointed.
There is no magic formula that will suit everyone, but given that the information is in the entry form that each driver has signed then I can assume that they are entering knowing what they need to achieve to qualify.
The great unknown of course when the format is decided is how many cars are going to enter. So far entry numbers as posted above are over 120 (not "just over 100") and 20+ car fields for qualifying are far from "spreading things a bit thing"
