I forgot to mention that we did have other commentators there both on the racing and in the infield but they were a part of the TV crew that were filming the event for The Pits TV show and for DVD's that will be for sale. So with the TV crew hooked into Daves system and our two commentators using the system we couldn't afford to over load it. We didn't want to lose the lot at once which was of concern to us because then no one would get any information. I hope that clears that side of it up for you. Maybe we need to look at upgrading our system who knows? Anyway Jason and his crew have done an awesome job of the footage so for those who missed out look forward to seeing that in the near future.

Wog Wayne, you mention maybe having to upgrade your system, and it has been suggested to me that currently your system only allows you to run two microphones? Are you able to confirm this? That being the case, some of the suggestions made by people here could not currently happen obviously. Barry B

I wasn't at this event but will comment as exactly the same thing happened last time I was at Nelson for the NZ Superstock Title.
Dave Birdling is one of my favourite commentators to listen to. His passion and enthusiasm for the sport show through in his commentating and he has some great sayings. However that in itself doesn't cut it for championship events. At a championship event you need someone to communicate information and analysis to the paying public. Grid Draws, Points and an analysis of what's going on enhance the event and educates those who don't necessarily frequent these championships.
Dave Birdling is never going to provide an in-depth analysis of the 3-heat format. That's not what he's good at and it shouldn't be his role. At the events I've been to previously at Nelson I've lost count of the times he says "this is interesting" without providing an analysis. It's been clear that Nelson has a gap in their commentary team for an analytical commentator at the big championships to communicate information and to enable Dave Birdling to do what Dave Birdling does best.
We are in a golden era of track commentators at the moment. There is no shortage of commentators who can be contacted and brought in to assist at a big championship.

Reading between the lines on Waynes post they (nelson club) went in with the mindset of Dave is our caller and until he wants to give it up he will be our caller, no outsider is going to come and kick him to the curb for a big meeting. They would have been better saying Dave is a great caller and will be calling these races, now who can we hit up to help him and give the ppl the info they need. I have no idea if he was avalb or not but if your looking for SI based, Tony T would have been a perfect fit. Having said all this I know how small and ummmm cosy the comm's box is in Nelson.

i think Dave mentioned a temperature of about 40 degrees in there at one stage! Was probably lucky he could talk at all! I know my brain, let alone mouth, doesnt function when it feels like a thousand degrees!

People say the commentary in Wellington was Fantastic. I have no idea as there was no commentary via internet availble. People complain about Nelson commentary I thought it was great sitting in my lounge in Christchurch. People (at the track) say the commentary in Wellington was Fantastic. Question??? How much did you pay to get a seat?? People (at the track) complain about Nelson commentary. Question??? How much did you pay to get a seat?? So $$ for $$ where was the issue??? My 2 cents worth (altho an ex Nelson resident and still a Nelson supporter) Sorry you don't get it either . most of the comments came from people who were at the track or relayed from people who were at the track. The other comments come from people who have been around long enough to know whether a job is well done or not. Forget that it was live on the internet , it matters not that it was. This was a national event with plenty of national interest. All things about a national event needs to be a step up from what is the local norm. The commentary at any meeting is a public performance open to critique (or praise as seen with the wellington Superstock meeting). Sorry I do get it...But Did you ask the people who went to both meetings where the best Bang for there Buck was?? Im sure it had to have been Nelson at half the price of Wellington. I know I was defentaly entertained when I was there Saturday Night (admit I didnt go to Wellington)

Some I know and have spoken to spent many hundreds attending both meetings. A few different dollars at the gate is a minor point.. In fact it probably cost all North Islanders more to attend Nelson than Wellington. Wellington was better for the information flow and race commentary which is what this thread is about. Wellington was polished while Nelson was needing a cut and polish . As for the racing the general consensus was Nelson on qualifying night was awesome but a bit of a bore on Saturday night, the dust from the Super Saloons wasn't well received by all.. Wellington was ok with a few interesting incidents for spice. Both meetings disappointing because of the Palmy domination.

Having been subjected to a lot of flack over the years we have put a good team at the springs together.
I said to Barry Brown and this is by no way a shot at Nelson, but is it time some microphones get handed over. We did that at the springs and found a new role for Ian Derbidge handing grids points results and keeping me in line lol
Barry help me out here

Every major Speedway event should have a specialist on the team which is why I was brought in for the World Speedway GP at Western Springs. Some local track announcers need to get over their fear {if that's the right word } of feeling like they are being replaced when a specialist comes in. I love working with someone who has the utmost knowledge of a class as it not only improves the quality of Announcing but makes us all look good in the eyes of the Public who we are there for in the first place. Drev if the Midgets ever get back to Meeanee I would even save you some of the tasty Hell Pizza we get served up each night lol.

Might take me a cuppla-three days to find the time to put them down, but will do it at some point in time over the next few days. Let's do it on the terracotta, Barry B
