"if you want me to be objective on at least one point id say a fair portion of the voting public in palmy would be happy if this event and the venue did disappear from town (not me of course)" ? on what evidence do you base this comment ? dont think i have ever seen an anti-event or anti-venue story circulating in the same manner that the kill joys near Westrn springs have done. as has been said the council and many many businesses appear to love the event. Move this event and speedway away from the Arena and then watch that facility die or suck even more dollars from ratepayers. its amazing how many people who go to the event want to grizzle about it yet they come back year after year. Bruce and Puk must be getting something right ?

A few years ago, when Super Rugby was taking off, and the Hurricanes were going tobe playing some games here, the Rugby Union wanted to redevelop the arena, and it included moving speedway out. There was a huge uproar about that happening, with a petition being signed in support of speedway staying. The plans to redevelop the arena in favour of rugby were binned and speedway won out.

The council has publicly stated previously that speedway is the major stakeholder at the arena now & that the whole complex would not be viable if the oval was left unused for 6 months of the year, rugby is small potatoes as far as generating income for the council It doesn't hurt that a lot of the housing in Waldegrave st is student flats either
