In the article p3 it looks like it is a certainty that this move will happen. Herald understands that the vote to take place in a few days has council vote at 12 for, 8 against and 1 unknown. Photo's on p 54/55 of the 4 stadiums involved in the reshuffle. Mt Smart capacity reduced from 30,000 to 17,800. Parts of Eastern and Western stands including all corporate box's and entire Southern Stand to be removed to make way for construction of the speedway track. Speedway will have full, unlimited access to the venue to run 20/30 meetings per year.

Here are links to articles in today's herald. 'Speedway promoter Bill Buckley, who will see his operation transfer from Western Springs to Mt Smart, believed the upgrade meant the Penrose ground would not be suitable for major live acts.' With the Western Springs Speedway promoter seeing the changes at Mt Smart as an upgrade Western Springs as a speedway venue is doomed. 25 to 30 meetings per season are likely at Mt Smart or at least that is often touted so I guess that's a big sway point for the promoter. Will the move to Mt Smart be as successful for Speedway as the promoter believes? . Not likely is my view, as it is the Springs classes run out of steam pretty quickly after just a shortened Western Springs season. Many of the top drivers also like to make their way across the ditch and to other places. The fans have their limits as well. Will the open wheel classes thrive or even maintain their profile around the country as a result?, well no that's not likely either as the Auckland registered cars will be tied to many more Auckland meetings than ever. This will no doubt mean even less visits to other regions. Will the Western Springs fans from West Auckland (and there are many) enjoy the extra travel to Mt Smart ? Midgets are magic at Western Springs , if the new track is larger will they still be the major draw card or will the magic be lost? Will the focus move to Sprintcars?. Nationally not such a popular class by my observation. Why are Western Springs fans not marching in the streets against the Auckland City proposals? darned if I know. We won't give up': Warriors fight Mt Smart stadium shuffleMoving homes could be easier
Stadium shuffle would mean price hike for music fans

Every single word is correct. What beats me is mosen clearly said they won't be moving unless the punters and the competitors want it... Personally I won't be doing 20-30 meetings no where near it.. Is there that much demand or time available? Or money. Or volunteers.

It's not just speedway that suffers. As a speedway fan I'm not happy, as a rugby league fan I'm not happy and as an outdoor concert fan I'm not happy. Maybe Auckland will become a place to leave rather than live. Maybe this is all a ploy to fix Auckland's housing crisis? No, they're not that clever....

So where does this leave Waikaraka park with an old grandstand with structural issues and a new highway that is going to be taking some of the pits making them smaller? My guess Waikaraka is part of the mount smart plan especially if there are to be up to 30 meetings each season. In my case i will go more often as it is closer to my home. A larger track would be a great improvement as Western Springs is too small for the sprinters. Auckland deserves a high quality speedway stadium.

Doubt the Auckland Council ever read this and even if they did, there's no chance they'd take any notice of it, but at least I've said my piece and it's out there for the world to consider. Here's my suggestion................. Eden Park is a White Elephant, they're never going to recover the money that was poured into it for the World Cup and the usage restrictions in the future are too tight. Western Springs for cricket.............you've got to be kidding North Harbour Stadium..............no justification for its' existence, there never was. Mt Smart.......perfectly fine for League and Concerts, no need to change but if you absolutely have too..... A multi purpose stadium on the waterfront .......nah, just kidding, that's a ridiculous idea. Out in South Auckland there is the old Puhinui quarry, which is currently being filled up with the spoil taken from the excavations from the Waterview tunnels. You've got a motorway on the east side of that (State Hwy 1) and a motorway to the west (State Hwy 20). The main trunk railway runs right next to it and there isn't a house within a kilometre, so no issues with noise. How about selling off both Eden Park and North Harbour, putting the money in out there and building a state of the art stadium AND speedway track (that's two facilities, not one inside the other) Plenty of room for pits, parking and anything else you want. By road only 10 minutes from Waikaraka, 5 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from downtown and better public transport access than any other existing stadium in Auckland. There, soap box finished with

To be honest when it comes to Auckland City they do what they want. We could have had a great Super City and have ended up having a dog. It looks like Mt Smart is going to be a done deal so we have to accept that. We need to work to having an awesome Mt Smart rather than a dog. If you fight the council they will win they will make Mt Smart a dog. Work with them and make them feel like they are going to get loads of credit for building a great stadium. Stroke their egos and we will be the winners and the money will flow. Let them feel so important on opening night. Bring it on. Racing will be the winner.

I hear the Warriors are heading to North Harbour Stadium. As said above, if its all a done deal work with the council and get as much possible out of the council and make the new springs a gem and get the bikes back there. As for Wiakaraka Park, I am led to believe its not going anywhere.

it is not a done deal, yet, and the Warriors certainly don't intend going to Albany. Click on the links above, read the articles. We don't HAVE to agree, accept and work with anything.....

Come on people we all know us Speedway fans are from a lower Socio-economic sub culture with dirt in our finger nails. We have no place in the new upwardly mobile Auckland. So we have to be shuffled out of the way into an industrial area where we belong. And as for those League people ... OH MY GOD ! they aren't just a sub-culture, they're sub-human. Let's just kick them over to the Shore where the South Africans and other immigrants live. No one will notice and the Yarpies won't care.
In the meantime the Luvies can get on with building Malls and concentrating on preparing for Fashion week.

Amazing how a promoter can determine the outcome of a revamped or a new venue such as we read in the tabloid paper trail . Why worry where it goes ,if it goes at all ? Elections for council will take place ,another broom will enter the top job and more than likely sweep the rubbish under the carpet ...

Well the Warriors really don't have much say in it at the end of the day. If there lease is up and there landlord (Auckland Council) want them out then that is surely their prerogative. If you was them would you go to North Harbour with good training facilities or as there CEO says "We will travel to different venues". That financially just want work. We are all speedway fans and competitors and travel all over the country to watch and compete in a sport we all love. So for the argument that supporters want go over the bridge is just crazy, if that was the case does the CEO think they are going to travel to places Hamilton and Rotorua The Warriors supporters deserve more respect than that. We all know that Western Springs is a dead duckso need to get the best deal they can. So I recon it will end up.....Springs to Mt Smart, Warriors to North Harbour and Waikaraka Park will stay were they are.

Option A Leave Speedway at Springs - with concerts - relocate Ponsonby Rugby somewhere - wipe out the current clubrooms etc for extra pits - build the planned hall of fame on town bend - tell cricket to fark off !! Leave the Rah Rahs at Eden Park and let it suffer - Leave the Warriors at Mt Smart demolish and sell the North Harbour white elephant - probably to prop eden park up If it ain't broke don't fix it.
Option B Speedway to go to Mt Smart - number two - perfect facility - go have a look and picture it - it will work - going to number one will not be good IMO - as for the rest of the stadiums - I couldn't care less - Warriors at Mt Smart #1 - Speedway Mt Smart #2

So if this is going to happen what will the speedway fans like to see in the new stadium ?? If its on the #1 ground where will the pits be located etc etc a blank canvas so to speak...lets hear your thoughts !!

Well a blank canvas would be nice and with endless ratepayers money that doesnt need to be justified. A fully covered complex so that the venue can be utilised all year round not only for speedway or banger racing but other users aswell. If western springs and waikaraka park were to share the same venue for 8-10 meetings each per season and with a covered complex where rainoffs are a thing of the past, this would open up a new market to more clubs that can use the complex, the easier it could be to sell the idea to get the best facilities for speedway.
