*Warning* For those of you who don't like my rant's, do yourself a favour and click on another thread.
The last two weeks have provided us with an excellent lesson in how to use social media to build interest, hype and ultimately revenue for a speedway event.
First up was Gisborne, one of the most isolated tracks in the country. Given the geographic isolation, their event could have been a non-event but the promotion was able to overcome that by building up their event via social media. The effort they went to on this forum to answer people's questions was outstanding. Contrast that with this week. There's been next to nothing. We know who the teams are (though the rumour mill suggests a change or two might happen) but that's about it. Why oh why would you conduct the draw on the night? The draw is a promotional tool which gets people excited about the matchups. With so many great teams coming there will be some stellar matchups but we have to wait until 7:00pm on Friday to find out who is facing who. I'd love to be discussing the potential permutations of the draw at this stage of the week.
In past season's the Friday night show has been pretty average. This year it looks like it could be pretty good but who would know? Via Facebook Keegan Orr stated he was turned away from driving Friday night so one assumes a full field of Stockcars. So who is going to be there? I've also heard that Dan Corrin is racing in the Saloons. That's the man who is 1nz, 1gp, 1ni. He is the most promotable driver in the entire Saloon class yet we've heard nothing official about his appearance. Is Nigel Ross racing? What a matchup. Corrin vs Ross. For once the Friday show looks like a genuine $30 show but who would know - it hasn't been promoted. It's too easy for the fans to say "I'll just go Saturday night" or "I'll find something else to do" when in reality it's going to be a good show but people haven't been informed as to the talent on display.
Jamo gets it. We've had a Modified list for Saturday night days ago. A great matchup with the 1nz and 1si going up against local hometown hero Jamie Fox. Or will the up and coming Brad Lane & Luke Brown surprise the favourites? Fantastic, we have something to look forward to, something to think about, something to talk about. A reason to get excited.
Then there is the livestream. 20 hours out from the start of the event and we have a price and confirmation the livestream is going to happen. When are they planning on releasing details? 3pm tomorrow? Gisborne had a test stream up all week and front footed the issues that they thought were going to arise. Livestreams are an excellent way to diversify revenue streams and to open up the event to audiences who can't travel to the event.
The result - I was quite excited by the time the Gisborne event rolled around. I about as excited as a pulverised rock for this weekend. The drivers and their teams are putting it all on the line this weekend and they deserve to have a big crowd to race in front of. But gee it's tough to get excited about this event when so little information has been released. It's 2016 and if a club like Gisborne can do it why can't Waikaraka Park?

To be honest I have always felt like waikaraka doesn't really give a nuts about this meeting or that it's a pain for them.. Which is sad because it actually is a good track for teams racing and has delivered some real cracker teams battles in the past. Before social media I remember turning up one year and it had been canceled the day before but the radio was still playing the ad on the drive home..I'm pretty sure if you made a 45 sec TV ad with teams high lights playing every now and then on TV and promised fireworks you would get a packed house like palmy

Hey Percy, you make some valid points but you may want to consider that the people that were doing all the promotion for the Stockcar Teams at Gisborne were the company that ran the live stream, somewhat of a vested interest, which was probably a wise move considering the large number of people that were not going to travel to Gisborne. Don't get me wrong, they did a good job on the whole and I paid for 2 nights of streaming. Maybe you should approach Bruce and offer to do the publicity for Waikaraka, you could most likely make quite an impact. Hope you enjoy the racing tonight.

A few will remember when there was 14 teams at this event, when the carnage often was greater than palmy as teams had a run under their belt. Of course helped by the fact the panthers for a looooooong time were to scared to send their a team up their.

Careful what you say about Waikaraka Park , some are fairly sensitive about their beloved track . Its ok to slag off others though.

Well said Percy. I have got involved these last two seasons with the publicity side of my local track. I handle the social media in my businesses, and being of good Scottish heritage, I'm always keen to get good bang for my bucks. The best thing about social media is that, apart from the cost of time, it's free. Newspaper and radio advertising doesn't come cheap, and most speedway clubs have a limited budget.
NZSTC did an absolutely outstanding job in promoting the Stockcar Teams Champs last weekend, both here and on social media. Yes, there may have been aspects of the event that didn't live up to expectations, but that doesn't take away from NZSTC's efforts which have set the standard for event promotion on a budget. Maybe some of us who use social media on a daily basis for business should get our heads together and roll out some ideas that clubs can pick up on, if they have one person with the passion to run with it.

The real question is given that the Promotional team is the same for PN & WP why does it not get the same commitment as surely commitment by them would also assist in all other facets for this event and also getting the commitment from all the NZ Teams in fronting for this event............
I must admit I have heard it being advertised on the radio this year...... or They wanted it to be a little low key this year with the upper grandstand being out of action which would normally accommodate 3000 people............
When it comes to communicating some clubs are very good at doing this and as Percy has written it gets people interested and a buzz is created around the event/s with intensity building as the event gets closer to happening.
Maybe some of us keyboard racers that are very good at Social Media need to offer their time and show the local club/s how to lift the profile and start promoting key events weeks out before the event highlighting the talent that is on show.............
Really hope WP is packed both nights and the racing is as good as PN Teams which will make it mouth watering and not to be missed..........

Jamo does a fantastic job for his promotion in the Mods for the duration of time he has been involved ,Carlos when at the Helm did the same for standard stocks by comparison Unfortunately not the same has happened for this meeting over a few years now ,and without sticking my head on the chopping block it is of my opinion only ,there seam s a problem between the promoter and the club administration . It is a hard road to hoe ,maybe the lack of super stocks registered to the club compared to years gone buy ,but however as you rely on so many volunteers doing there part, the adoption of enthusiasm hasnt come forth . A shiney example of this is Barry Brown on Macgors the write ups and posts are not the same ,so there has been a decline in general comment . So take a key figure away and that one person can lead ,we must be grateful there is Percy holding the fort ..

Most of the moderators on here dislike Social media begin used as a way of promoting-advertising speedway information, Facebook for example.

Remember, as per Smeats, the team that did the promoting was very much seperate of the club, and at times very frustrated with getting official info from the club.
Percy, I don't think there would have been a difference from tonight, and Gizzy if it wasn't for Jason and his team.

And Jason didn't have much to do with the stream, live laps yes, but the stream was someone else.

Wasnt thinking live stream or live laps. It was all the info up front from the NZ stockcar teams site. I thought Jase was with that aswell.
If not, then those people were the ones behind all the pre work and info that the Gizzy club were not doing.

And again he has helped Gizzy when they have been less than helpful to him.
There would have been no info if it wasn't for him.
