I thought it was a solid show last night without reaching the stratosphere.
The four semi-finalists are clearly a step above Rotorua and Auckland though the latter two teams contributed to the entertainment of the evening.
There was some real tactical diversity amongst the qualifiers. Manawatu were hardly interested in blocking, trying to get as many point scoring cars across the line as possible. Hemi ended up in a block role both races but it will be interesting to see if they employ the same tactics with night two being first across the line. The Mustangs don't have a pure blocker in their line-up.
Panthers on the other hand appeared to go 3-1 utilising Taniwha as a blocker with others running. Perhaps some of that was due to losing Simon Joblin early in the opening race though 3-1 does seem to be the modern tactic of choice.
Except for Hawkes Bay who rely on their trusty 2-2. Stanaway and Jude/Groome running whilst Long and McLachlan blocked. It took an inspired performance from the greatest Stockcar driver ever to beat them even though they rested Steve Jude.
We have an odd situation going into night two where the lower ranked semi-final contenders are probably the favourites to win the semi-finals! Plus Hawkes bay could potentially face both qualifying night opponents again!!

Just to clarify a couple of things after having spoken to the senior Referee from last night. Ethan Rees was spoken to about his conduct with regards the roll over of Jason Long and also another incident where he reversed to get into position to launch an attack. He was excluded from the race.
The loose wheel , the way the referee saw it the wheel initially appeared to be heading infield and the leading cars passed it on their last lap. As it turned out the wheel followed the pole line but the race was all but done and dusted so the lights were left green. Similar scenario for the suspension item on the track just past the finish line.
As always several drivers were spoken to mostly over issues to do with the pole line .

The E.Rees issue, if he was in the wrong shouldn't he be taken off when it happens as this happens to often and then the car goes on to do more damage to the other team when he shouldn't be out there...Just my thoughts though

Can't stop races for every indescression and the Ref has to manage events as they happen the best he can.

pole line incidents seem to be common. at gisborne the concrete pole line would have been hard to see with gizzys so-so lighting and the unpainted concrete pole line. what is the pole line like for visability at auckland?

LOL, pole line is Gisborne is easy. If you are flat, you're on the grass. There is quite a bit of difference when you drive off the track onto the grass, it's a big bump.
