Once again absolutely disappointing in the standard of commentary - and that is being polite. for us regular travelers who get around other tracks, the likes of Rotorua and any team they get in for the big meetings they set the standard. Those same team have been used at other tracks for national meetings and have often had to sort out how things are done so there is a format the spectators can follow - especially those that want all the points, record them etc. The commentary team and what they deliver can be a big part of the experience At least one positive, for those of us who use the FM frequency to listen to the commentary, Palmy does at least run this for the bigger meetings such as this weekend. For the general person for example in the grandstand, I doubt you would hear more than 30% of what is said. So thank god for Malcolm in the middle effectively running the show and reminding again and again what to provide to the public, how and when. I am sure this will have been more noticeable for those enjoying the live stream. The person in the commentary box made so many mistakes and was told how to do his job repeatable so many times it personally took a gloss of the nights show. # first Rotorua race, called Dale Stewart (9R) firstly as 74R and then 34R during the racing # how many times did Malcolm ask for the results to include the car number as well # the commentator clearly cannot add, Malcolm having to regularly point out his adding errors. # Could not recall previous race points for a team easily. # lack of pit updates - and this can be a big part of the meeting - needs a specialist commentator for this role as has happened n the past. and the list could go on and on. This whole subject and the value a good commendatory team can add to a meeting has been raised time and again yet the team running the biggest meeting of the year do not seem to me anyway to be treated seriously or perhaps not understood? any good "criticism" should come with possible solutions. One would be at least add help in the commentary box - this back room support seems to be why Paul Hickey and any team working with them on big meetings get at least an 8 out of 10 fro any meeting Palmy this time - using a Percy harsh review - 3 out of 10 - thank go for Malcolm Comment away

Indeed, the regular palmy seemed less-than-interrsted in the event. In some parts Malcolm had to ridehim like a bicycle to get anything out of him. The random guy reporting from the pits did it about half a dozen times at the most.
Malcolm did a sterling job, if it wasnt for him........

As someone who’s spent time calling events, I always think it’s s good thing when the commentary as opposed to what’s happening on track is the issue people focus on .
There is clearly loyalty at play, as that same person hasn’t been up to the role almost since the livestreams first started, but im sure does an adequate job the 15+ other club nights a year so bit tough to push him aside for the biggest meet of the year. Whoever was in the pits was just learning .
Mal Sines was fantastic

There was a hilarious exchange last night when Malcolm asked the Palmy commentator to repeat the points slowly for the spectators. Well the Palmy commentator kinda sarcastically went through them slowly - in fact it was the best points update he said all night! Got to hand it out to him though his pronounciation of the Maori word Whakawerawera (thermal wonderland in Rotorua) was the best I've heard from a commentator for a while - Paul Hickey has the best pronounciation of Maori words of any commentators! Gee what would it take to have BB or Mintie in with Malcolm? Slightly off topic but here's a quote from Mintie from the recent 240's Mintie: "Barry and I need a physio and two ambulances - one for the competitors and one for us"

As a former mic man I'm loath to criticise a colleague, but last night was so appalling, and so frustrating, I'll make an exception. The first thing the commentator in the box needs to understand is the format, and from there what's the important information that the listeners will need to be supplied with to follow the event. It's not rocket science.
Last night was all about points. With no groups it was overall points, and if you couldn't make the top 4 then at least 5th to 8th will get you into the second night and a chance to finish third overall. And be seeded for 2019.
Last night we often got no more than drivers names in the higgilty piggilty results we were given, sometimes a car number and sometimes even a track letter. Points were all over the place, some official results were read out and others weren't, but it was all done so fast it was pointless. Literally. Even when a race result had changed from the way he'd originally called it, no official points were ever given off an official result. No reason for the change given. No analysis in Rd 2 as to what a team needed to score to make night 2. It was impossible to follow.
Malcolm was trying his best. The man upstairs had the ELS and the official points sheets, yet did very little with them. Malcolm was getting his unofficial points via text from somebody at home, and from the infield trying desperately to get something official from upstairs. I suspect he's still waiting. Mal's unofficial results turned out to be not quite right, as the M vs MM and P vs S races had their points changed from the initial result given. That may have been simply because the man upstairs took them off the ELS too quickly. You have to wait until the race has been declared finished, all cars have crossed the line and the ELS locked before allocating points, but there may have been other reasons. I know at one stage he gave Baypark a 1, 2, 3 result against the Mustangs, but later mentioned a Taniwha in second place? Who knows?
The promotion has to take some of the blame for this. It's the biggest meeting of the year, and most years there are complaints over commentary. Referees too of course. Not solely commentary haha. But they do next to nothing to rectify it for the following year. This meeting deserves the best Superstock commentary team available. Fans pay big money to reserve seats in the stand. $50 per night on the live stream and we have to do our own points and analysis. It's extremely disappointing to say the least.
Petero, I agree with everything you posted above.

He was trying to be smart, but it was the only time all night the results were read slow enough to understand, especially as he didn't format how he read the results out. He was all over the place, and seemed to love talking about who finished 6th. Go figure. All we need is 1st 11g, 2nd, 15g, 3rd, 64p, 4th 35p, 5th 37g, totalling Gisborne Giants 150 points, Palmy Panthers 45 points. Re the World 240's, Sonja called us "Broken and Brokener". I've never been one to bag commentators but agrer entirely with everything mentioned here. Also adding who cares about who finished 6th! It's irrelevant and can only cause confusion when it is hard to hear. I find it ironic that every year in the past I would see Rusty getting bagged on here yet the first year without him is the worst I have heard in my 10 years attending.

Having been part of a pit crew (mud scraper for a superstock) in the pits during a major meeting sometimes the last thing a driver wants is someone to poke a microphone in your face while you are frantically trying to get your car ready for the next race however our driver knew in advance this is part of the culture and served an important link to the public. Mintie does it better than anyone and he has a particular manner that doesn't come across as intrusive. All the best to Palmy trainee keep persevering and don't give up! My understanding is drivers are briefed about this before hand so are prepared in advance. Quote from Mintie when a superstock driver at recent 240's qualified for the finals Mintie "I think if he had false teeth in they would have fallen out of his mouth"

Mal Sines shows once again why he is by far the best around. Mike Wilson will be a huge bonus in the box but they need to find another Mal for the pit interviews as he is brilliant at that too. One basic piece of info that was missing most of the time was who the reserves were.

Was in the Grandstand, and you are very wrong with 30% ....... didn't hear a thing the whole night from the commentary. Yes I did hear some mumbles at times that reminded me it was there - but couldn't make anything out - it was just not loud enough. Sounds like it was a blessing in not being able to hear any of it anyway. Came on here last night to see what the final points added up to be.

I am pleased to hear it was not only me that was so frustrated with the commentary last night, not one negative comment to my thread certainly adds weight to how bad it was. talking about it this morning a few people commented on how flat I seemed last night at the usual after match de-brief chew the fat session. reflecting on it is sure as hell was.
a well put together commentary team can add huge value, last night was bull nuts........ thank god or the guy in the middle - as they say - that man deserved a BD - and then some
