What can you say about the career of Ivan Mauger? He is one of those rare talents who transcended the sport and introduced speedway to households that otherwise wouldn't watch speedway racing.
It's hard to see how any driver or rider could ever hope to match what Ivan achieved in his career. Six times world champion and a trophy cabinet full of other achievements.
Off the track you'll rarely hear a bad word spoken. Not all champions are well liked but Ivan certainly was. His interest in contributing to the sport continued well beyond his riding days.
A sad loss for the international speedway community.

One of the very greatest to grace the sport. Introduced a level of professionalism not seen before in the motorcycle speedway world. Started the resurgence of USA as a speedway force, and made forays behind the "iron Curtain" when others would'nt. Ran a lot of training schools etc back here as well, RIP Ivan Mauger, a true icon of NZ sport.

Saw him many times in NZ. Went to the 1978 world final at Wembly where Ivan could only finish eighth. Alas I was a year early as he won in 1979. A golden era for NZ solo riders starting with a Ronnie Moore, continuing with Barry Briggs and capped off by Mauger, the best of the three in my opinion.

RIP Ivan Mauger. Even today if you went to Poland people know who you are and where NZ is simply because of your exploits. You were unfortunately more famous there than in your own country. Thanks for giving me a love for speedway and lastly thanks for the signed biography. NZ will never have a speedway rider like you.

A long with his individual world champs as well as long track champs don't forget he also won a few pairs champs as well,.Not sure how many but some one will know for sure ? Two World pairs. 1969 with Bob Andrews and again in 1970 with Ronnie Moore. Ivan always said the win with his boyhood hero Ronnie was one of his proudest achievements.

I remebered Ivan bringing his troupe of riders nz before he retired.. am sure couple were Neil Evitts and Chris morton who raced springs for couple seasons.
back in early 1980s there was huge Motorcycle series on old cinders track where Ivan still racing even held track record 1m 9.2 secs. till it was beaten by one ivans proteges Kenny Carter England who did 4 laps 1m 8.3 secs. some the riders who raced that series included double world champion Bruce penhall, Bobby schwartz, Billy sanders, Gary Gugliemi and noteable kiwi riders David Bargh, Mitch shirra name few.
