It is totally unacceptable that in 2019 we are yet again having a discussion about substandard commentary, points updates and a sound system that is clearly from the dark ages and completely substandard. It's really simple - if you're going to host a NZ title (or any meeting for that matter) and you're happy to take people's hard earned money off them, the least you can do is provide the expected services. A PA with enough volume, commentators who understand and deliver what is expected at a championship. Info and updates and so. Eine adjusting the volume all night according to track action/sound level. This is why our sport never goes forward. The paying spectators are vary rarely treated with the disserved respect. Gimmicks like a helicopter drop in in are waste of time. Do the basics right first. Had zero idea last night of what was going on at our biggest championship. Its simply not good enough. This has been going on for 30 years or more! Sad,angry and dumbfounded. How about a score board or something, was hard to follow last night. I kept up to date on cell phone.

I go to watch and listen, not look at my phone. It's not hard to do right. Just spend a bit of the income from spectators on equipment, and have great informative commentary. Sound gear lasts for years.

agree with commentary posts, no order in points etc so many around us could not follow either
however the commentary if available via FM 88.1 so while how they provide info is not what we are used to compared to other meetings you cna at least hear what is spoken regardless of car noise

I was sitting on turn 3 and all night had no problem with hearing the P.A, and the radio thing is a good idea, you can get it through you cell phone and some ear plugs, also you may notice that the speakers at the track are half way down the poles becouse residence in Kaiapoi & Kaianga complaned, so WFG lowered them to reduice the noise, which make the sound commentary hardened to hear,

This has been going on for 30 years or more! Sad,angry and dumbfounded. Oh what a grump you are Malcolm Sines. All the offical results of every championship race were read out last night in full, plus the full points for each group after the three heats were completed, and partial points prior to that. All the grids and race results were on the WFG web site within minutes if you really needed to analyse the heck out of the details instead of enjoying the show. There were minimal updates from the referees because there were minimal interventions and/or changes, but the few there were we communicated as soon as we were told. Some race results we had out 10 mins after the race finished. If you can't hear the PA then either sit closer to the speakers (being careful to pick your way through the people who tell us its too loud) or better yet take advantage of the 88.1FM broadcast. A lot of planning and discussion has taken place over many months between the commentary team, the promoter, the Pits TV and key spectators regarding how much information is "just right" and the respect paid to the visiting public is huge, much greater than your sour rant implies. Get a life and enjoy the racing pal, and stop knocking those who work bloody hard to bring you the best show we possibly can. Its winging and negative attitudes like yours which are holding the sport back. Sad, disappointed and gob-smacked.

And there it is as usual 'shoot the messenger!" so I'm lying to you that we couldn't here in turn 1 & 2 nor wherever I walked around? Tony I'm not grumpy, just extremely frustrated. Especially since some tracks get it right and some don't. You admitted the gear wasn't up to scratch yet you're attacking me for saying its not good enough?! No point doing good work planning etc, if no one can hear. You're basically wasting your time and effort. But feel free to slag me for pointing that out. And my life is just great thanks Tony. But i paid my money at the gate, why is it I can't expect to hear the commentary at the most important meeting?

Not at the track myself so cannot comment too much, but I imagine those in the stands along the back straight pay extra for those seats? They've been there for quite a few seasons now? And WG has admitted there's a speaker shortfall in that part of the track. So they knew about this problem well before this meeting got underway.
So my question is, how fair and ethical is it to knowingly shortchange those that pay the most to attend? Those paying extra for those reserved seats are likely the biggest fans of the sport, and deserve extra in return, not less. I'd also suggest that telling people to move, in what should be a full house tonight, is hardly practical either. All that's going to do is annoy two groups of people.
Not a direct dig at WG, because other tracks have problems with inadequate sound systems too. And information flow. Malcolm, you've raised a very valid point or two though. Back in the pre-ELS days we had to work so hard to keep people up to date, with one person eyes on track calling all cars across the line at race end while another person wrote them down as fast as possible. Then points were allocated to those finishing positions, the maths on sub-totals or totals done and unofficial points, top to bottom in program order, were done after maybe announcing the top 3. Then there was race analysis from that information, who had made the most moves, both up and down the field, and how that related to their starting grids in Heat 3. Who was looking good. Who was in trouble. Who to watch. The importance of each relevant pass. This should of gotten easier with the advent of ELS, but sometimes it seems like we are going backwards.

Hi Tony, I’m a regular at WG and love coming. I try to bring others who may not be speedway fans like myself. WG is my “home away from home” I like your commentating – you have an easy listening voice, you are funny and you deliver good informative interviews to provide insight. My favourite spot is the grandstand especially in big meetings. it's smoke free and provides great viewing. Unfortunately I couldn’t hear a word you said last night! I’m 53 years old getting up there but still got my senses. To my left was a guy who had flown from Auckland – a regular at Wikaraka Park very knowledgeable about speedway. To my right was a couple who are speedway fanatics “drooling” over the Palmy teams coming up. I could probably speak for our little group to say we just love speedway! Not sure what the problem is but here in the grandstand we would love to hear you!
